SWAT team arrests wanted man

CONNEAUT — Police officers wearing armor arrested a Jefferson man wanted on a local warrant without a problem Monday, said Public Safety Director Jon Arcaro.

Members of Ashtabula County’s special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team were called to help nab Johnathon Walker, 31, from an apartment at the Highland Place complex on West Main Road, Arcaro said.

On Monday, Conneaut police received a complaint from a Highland Place resident that an individual no longer was wanted at one of the apartments and that the man usually is armed, Arcaro said. The SWAT team was mobilized as a precaution, he said.

“There was a potential of gunplay,” Arcaro said.

Police entered the apartment with a key provided by an occupant and found Walker hiding in a cupboard, Arcaro said. Walker was unarmed and was arrested without incident, he said.

Walker was wanted on a warrant issued by Conneaut Municipal Court, alleging intimidation of a witness in a past case, Arcaro said. The warrant was issued in August, according to a court spokeswoman.

Additional charges may be filed, Arcaro said.
