Edgewood students learning lifesaving skills

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP —  For the past four years, Edgewood Senior High School has offered a unique experience to its 10th grade health classes. Thanks to a grant awarded to University Hospitals, every student at Edgewood has been given the knowledge to become certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This course is offered to many schools in Ashtabula County, including Braden Junior High School.

Chris Juncker, one of the health teachers at Edgewood, said that the class includes some introduction, then it’s all hands on. “They go through different stages with a video... eventually they are able to become certified,” Juncker said.

The class also touches on how to relieve someone that is choking, as well as lessons in the correct usage of an AED, or automated external defibrillator.

“The CPR course, taught by certified employees of University Hospitals, lasts only three days out of the semester,” Juncker said.

Students are each distributed a practice dummy and all of the necessary supplies to safely conduct CPR. They watch an informational video and follow along with the help of the instructors.

“After the final day of the course, if the students can demonstrate their CPR skills on their own, they will be certified,” said Juncker.

Students that participated in the program have raved that it was fun and informative. One student claims that knowing how to do CPR may help him save a life someday. The course has received outstanding feedback from its participants, and will continue as long as the grant is available. Juncker plans to offer the course to his health class next semester, Jan. 31 until Feb. 2.

Another unique experience found at Edgewood is the school’s Academic Challenge/Scholastic Bowl team. They have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming Scholastic Bowl challenge. Academic Challenge and Scholastic Bowl are competitions where teams of three students answer trivia questions in various categories ranging from presidents and science, to pop culture and random facts.

At the beginning of the year, members were voted onto the team by fellow classmates. Six students make up the team, three primary members and three alternates. Team captain Marco Orlando, assisted by Jacob Crislip and Jon Pendleton, lead the team to what will hopefully be a victory. Alternates include Kane Swanson, Robert Taylor and Allee Coates. It is their duty to support the team and be prepared for competition in case of emergency. The program is facilitated by English teacher, Michelle Sardella.

Once a week the team members meet to go over possible problems and questions and hold practice rounds to prepare for the fast approaching Scholastic Bowl. The competition will take place Feb. 23 at Pymatuning Valley High School. The Warriors will compete against other area schools for the victory.

Academic Challenge, which was taped Nov. 20, will air 7 p.m. March 10 on TV Channel 5. Be sure to tune in to watch Edgewood compete against two other teams from the surrounding area.

Sardella, who has been in charge of Academic Challenge for the past two years said, “It is exciting to work with a new team and see the growth over the season.”

w said that he has a lot of fun and enjoys his time with the team. “It’s great to learn interesting fun facts,” he said.
