• A man told Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies his ex-landlord tossed his belongings in the yard and then set them on fire Thursday afternoon.
The victim said he was recently evicted from a Cox Road residence in Windsor Township, but some of his property remained in the premises. His ex-landlord forced open the door, grabbed the belongings, tossed them on the lawn and set them ablaze, deputies said.
• A Jefferson woman alerted deputies to a telephone scam Tuesday afternoon, according to reports.
On Tuesday, the woman received a phone call from a man identifying himself as a bank official who told her she was in line to receive a $7,800 government grant after she pays a $250 “security deposit.” Suspecting a scam, the woman eventually hung up, but not before obtaining a call-back number. A deputy dialed the number, and was connected to a man in India who told him to send the money to an address in that country.
• A man lost $100 from an automatic teller machine last week when he was momentarily distracted by another man at an Ashtabula Township convenience store, deputies said.
The victim told deputies he was using the ATM at Sheetz on Route 20 when another man standing nearby told him a certain lottery ticket seems to be lucky lately. The victim went to buy tickets, forgetting to retrieve the cash from the ATM. When he returned to the machine, the money was gone, according to a report.
Store surveillance cameras showed the man who offered the lottery ticket tip took the money when the victim was distracted, deputies said. The suspect drove away in an orange, later-model Mitsubishi Eclipse, video cameras showed. The suspect is white, stands about six feet tall, weighs around 200 pounds with short hair and a goatee, and was wearing a black leather coat and dark jeans, deputies said.
