Daniel T. Schmidt

CONNEAUT — Daniel T. Schmidt, age 92, of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Friday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2013, at the home of his daughter following a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Silverdale, Wash., the son of William and Anna (Robinson) Schmidt. He attended Conneaut Schools and was a Navy veteran. He married Margaret (Tanner) on Oct. 16, 1939.

Dan was one of the last Commercial Fishermen on the American side of Lake Erie. He received recognition from Great Lakes Fisherman for his rescue of three children adrift in the Lake. An avid gardener, he was planning for this year’s garden and what was needed for his beloved tractor before his heart attack.

A much-loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, he is survived by his children, Lenora Toth and Dannette (William) Ingersolll, both of Conneaut, Thomas (Merceda) Schmidt of Millcreek, Pa. and Billie (David) Gee of Conneaut; grandchildren,  Damon (Ruth) Toth, Mary (Joe) Costa, Angela (Rick) Funke, Nicole (Steve) Samels, Christopher (Mary) Ingersoll, Kelly (Charles) Anthony, Keith Ingersoll, Karen Picard, Katherine (Gregory) Simmons, Victoria (Jason) Thompson, Vaughn Schmidt, Penelope (James) Ratajczak, David (Wendy) Gee and Shelley (Larry) Allen; great-grandchildren, Corey Toth, Chelsea Toth, Ashley Costa, Savannah Toribio, Joshua Funke, Riley Samels, Olivia Samels, Kayla Ingersoll, Tanner Ingersoll, Thomas Ingersoll, Megan Picard, Ryan Picard, Luke Simmons, Hudson Simmons, Jamie (Joshua) Sipes, Erin Ratajczak, Jessie Ratajczak, Addison Gee, Alexandra Gee, Adrianna Gee, Jessica Allen, Sarah Allen and Rebecca Allen; great-great-grandson, Daniel Sipes; his brother, Fredrick (Phyllis) Schmidt; sister-in-law, Betty Smith; and many nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; sisters, Anna Schmidt, Marie Roberts, Jessie Andes and Elizabeth Thome; brother, William Schmidt; brothers-in-law, James Roberts, Jerry Thome and Joseph Smith; and a son-in-law, David (Jim) Hunter.

Funeral Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27th, at MARCY FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTER, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Pastor Joyce Shellhammer, of First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Calling Hours will be at the Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, and also on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until time of Services at 11.
