Curtis E. Jones

TOLEDO — Curtis E. “Deacon” Jones, age 81, of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away on Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2012, at the Rae-Ann Nursing Home in Geneva surrounded by his family.

Born July 7, 1931, in Floyd County, Ky., he was the son of Huckleberry and Joanna (Shepard) Jones. On March 31, 1951, he married Helen Baker in Bradshaw, W.Va., and they moved to Ohio in 1954.

In addition to being a Veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Jones was retired from Elkem Metals in Ashtabula.

Deacon enjoyed his family, playing poker, slot machines, golfing, bowling, playing harmonica, banjo and guitar. For many years, "Deacon" also owned and operated "Deacons Top of the Hill" bar. He thoroughly enjoyed eating and being with his loved ones. Deacon was a very social person and a friend to every one. Curtis was known by his grandchildren and caregivers as “Poppo”.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Jones of Ashtabula; daughter, Trudee (Bill) Ferguson; son, Curtis Jones Jr.; daughters, Debbie Layne of Ashtabula, Rosalie (Mark) Artman of Ashtabula and Tammy (Anthony) Fasano of Ashtabula; 12 grandchildren, Chris Caltrider, Mindee Morrison, Valerie Quinonez, Tonya Jones, Brandi Layne, Corey Layne, Daniel Jones, Mark Jones, Paul Michael Blickenderfer, Daniela Fasano, Gian Carlo Fasano and Brandon Artman; sister, Lyda Gladys Baker of Ashtabula; former son-in-law, Gary Caltrider; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and three sisters.

Funeral Service will be 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5th, at Pentecostal Church of God, 2201 Cook Road, with Pastor Kenneth Roberts officiating. Burial will take place in Edgewood Cemetery with Full Military Honors being conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard Team from Post #103.

Visitation will be on Wednesday at the Church from 11 a.m. until the time of the Service.

A very special and heart felt thank-you to all the staff at Rae-Ann Skilled Nursing and Rehab for the wonderful and appreciated care and love shown to him and the family. Thanks also goes out to the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
