KINGSVILLE — Margaret "Marge" A. Houser, age 86, of South Ridge West, Saybrook Township, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, where she was a resident for the past seven years.
She was born June 4, 1926, in Carteret, N.J., the daughter of Charles and Jennie (Seres) Jedlicka. The family later relocated to the Brooklyn/Manhattan, N.Y. She graduated early, at the age of 16, participating in a gifted program at an all girl’s high school.
Following graduation she was employed at Chase Bank. She married John Houser on June 7, 1947 and relocated to Saybrook. Marge was a familiar face at Hills Department Store where she worked for many years. She also worked the Election Polls at Windermere School.
Marge enjoyed her many family fishing trips to Canada. She was an accomplished speed reader and enjoyed reading, cooking and baking. She was especially proud of her Hungarian/Czechoslovakian background.
She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish; she enjoyed traveling with the Happy Travelers going to casinos and Broadway musicals. While at the nursing home, she was very active in the resident council, serving as president, cooking club, activities club, weekly bingo and prayer groups. She was known at the nursing home as the “Queen of Jeopardy".
Surviving her are her four children, Kathryn (Tom) Murnane of Dublin, Ohio, John (Lisa) Houser of Chaptico, Md., Joan Locke of Cape Coral, Fla. and Michael (Cheri) Houser of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jillian, Brendan, Joseph, Stephanie, John and Steven; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Aidan; a brother, Charles (Linda) Jedlicka of Valrico, Fla.; and her dear friend, Pat (Ronald) Dale of Ashtabula whom she loved like a daughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John in 2003; and her son-in-law, Jerry Locke.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26th, with a Memorial Service at 3:00 p.m., at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Fr. Philip Miller officiating.
