ASHTABULA —
Rita Marie Steen, age 82, of Reed Ave., passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012, at Country Club Retirement Center.
She was born in Sharon, Pa. on August 21, 1930, the daughter of Frank and Clara (Knapp) Wilds.
Mrs. Steen enjoyed a life at home with her five children and taught Sunday School for 29 years at St. Joseph’s Church. An accomplished pianist, she also played fife in the fife and drum band, as well as the Messiah Chorus for many years. She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Ladies Guild and was an active Hospice and Hospital Volunteer.
In her earlier years, she enjoyed working at the Family Bakery and playing high school basketball. She was also a home wine maker for many years. Mrs. Steen enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, as well as the many animals that touched her life.
Her survivors include her four children, Peg (Gary) Mitchell of St. Petersburg, Fla. and William (Sandy) Steen, John (Diana) Steen and Paul Steen, all of Ashtabula; six grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Tommy, twins Danielle and Alyssa, and Zachary; and her son-in-law, Tom Brace of Ashtabula.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Steen on Feb. 2, 2003; her daughter, Jeanie Brace; one grandson, Christopher Steen; three brothers, Paul, Robert and Richard Wilds; twins who died in infancy; three sisters, Dolores Sincich, Maryellen Riddle and Rosemary Wilds who died in childhood; and her first husband, Jay McCoy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 15th, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Worship Site, 3330 Lake Ave., Ashtabula. The Rev. Raymond Thomas, Pastor, will preside. Burial will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Monday, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League, Our Lady of Peace Parish or Hospice of the Western Reserve.
