GENEVA — William B. Vandervort, age 85, of W. Main St., Geneva, died Wednesday evening, March 6, 2013, at Rae Ann Geneva Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a resident the past six years.
He was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Bristol, the son of William R. and Margaret (Goshorn) Vandervort and had been a lifelong resident of Ashtabula County. He graduated from Orwell High School and was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Korean Conflict and World War II. Mr. Vandervort was married to Laurel J. Unsinger on July 2, 1955, at Park Street Christian Church in Geneva.
He was employed with the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. more than 30 years, retiring in 1987. Following retirement, he worked part time as night guard at ATC and was a parking lot attendant at Walker Funeral Home.
He was a member of Park Street Christian Church, where he was a lifetime elder and served as a Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible school teacher, was a member of the Orwell American Legion and enjoyed roller skating, reading and bowling.
He is survived by two children, Rev. Darrell L. (Marsha) Vandervort of Warner Robins, Ga. and Denise R. Scibona of Geneva; seven grandchildren, Elisabeth (Eric) Watkins, Sarah (John Michael Johnson) Vandervort, Thomas (Andrea) Vandervort, Lauren Micah (David) Ham, Jennifer (Norman) Limpert, Jason Scibona and Tina Scibona; four great-grandchildren, Abigail, Lucy, Vivian and Lauren; two brothers, Dale Vandervort of Alabama and Clifford (Marylou) Vandervort of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laurel in 1994; a son-in-law, Frank Scibona Jr. in 2005; and two brothers, Scott and Richard Vandervort.
Memorial Services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 12th, at Park St. Christian Church, 97 Park St., Geneva, with Pastor John Munday officiating. Burial will take place in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Geneva VFW Post #6846 will provide Military Honors.
Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, at the Geneva Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 323 S. Broadway, Geneva.
