CLARKE HERZOG



ASHTABULA - William Clarke Herzog, age 72, of Lake Road, Ashtabula, Ohio, died Friday, September 8, 2006.

He was born April 18, 1934, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and had lived in Ashtabula for over 20 years at Redbrook, a place he truly loved. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany following the Korean War.

Prior to his retirement, he worked in sales and marketing for Oscar Meyer and Smith Provision.

A lifelong student of history, Mr. Herzog also enjoyed art, photography, and stamp collecting.

A loving husband, father, and grandfather, his survivors include his wife of 50 years, Janette (Roderick) Herzog, whom he met on the beach at Redbrook, and later married in 1956; five children, Alice (Peter) Metzloff of Medina, Robert Hamilton of New York, New York, Susan (Greg) Woodward of Stow, Jean (Kevin) Mulholland of The Woodlands, Texas, and Charlotte (James) Reger of Madison; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Page Hamilton and Jean Clarke Hamilton-Herzog; and his step-father, C.A. Herzog.

Friends, family, and neighbors are welcome to a Celebration of His Life to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2006, at the Ashtabula BPO Elks #208 Lakefront Lodge, 3115 Lake Road West, Ashtabula.

MARY B. FERRELL



ASHTABULA - Mary Betty Ferrell, age 77, was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, at the Cleveland Clinic after a long illness.

Born April 11, 1929, in Morehead, Minnesota, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Rosabel (Poriere) Dennis.

Mrs. Ferrell was the Owner and Operator of Carpet Mart in Ashtabula for 27 years, and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

She enjoyed playing bingo and pinochle.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Ale Ferrell Sr.; her son and daughter-in-law, Ale and Sonja Ferrell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Mary Ramsden, Dorothy Stewart, and Veronica Keller; brothers, David, Nick, Donald, Mel, Jay, and Denny Dennis; and an infant sister, June.

Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, with entombment to follow at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Ashtabula.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2006, at GUERRIERO FUNERAL HOME, 1550 West 19th Street, Ashtabula.

CHRISTINE E. DAMON



CONNEAUT - Christine E. Damon, age 88, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Friday, September 8, 2006, at the Villa at the Lake.

Born August 28, 1918, in Norwich, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Duff and Alma (Johnson) Bricker. Christine came to Conneaut when she was 1 year old, and lived her entire life in north Conneaut. She then went on to graduate from Conneaut High School in 1936.

She worked as a Bookkeeper for Kehoe's Plumbing, and was also a Secretary at the former Nickel Plate Railroad until the birth of her children.

Christine was very active in raising her children and her grandchildren, and loved them all dearly.

She enjoyed traveling and going on bus trips with her husband, Ivan, whom she was married to for over 63 years. Christine also enjoyed sewing, gardening, plants, and loved to bake.

She was a lifelong member of Lakeview United Methodist Church, and a longtime Sunday school teacher, as well as being active in the Ladies Aid serving as treasurer for many years.

Christine is survived her husband, Ivan M. Damon, whom she married August 20, 1943; two sons, James and Cindy Damon, and John and Barb Damon, all of Conneaut; a daughter, Joanne and Ron Williams of Conneaut; a sister, Alma Jean and John Dixon of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; six grandchildren, Heather and Aaron Chamberlin, Heather Damon, and Erich, Ian, and Alex Williams; two great-grandchildren, Josh and Christopher Chamberlin; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Duff Bricker.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2006, with the Reverend David Miller of Lakeview United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2006, at the RAISIAN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Western Reserve of Ashtabula County, Station Three Rescue Squad, or to the charity of one's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

BARTON E. NOLAN



ASHTABULA - KSUAC History Professor Barton Edward Nolan died unexpectedly Sunday, September 3, 2006, at his home.

He was born September 22, 1933, in New York, New York, a son of the late William and Jeanne (McGowan) Nolan.

A graduate of Niagara University, he received his Master of Arts Degree from Columbia University, and completed all but his dissertation toward a doctorate there as well.

A lieutenant in the US Army, he served from 1955 to 1957.

After a semester of teaching at Slippery Rock University, he moved to Ashtabula in 1960 and began his teaching career at Kent State University, Ashtabula Campus, and currently owned the longest tenure in the entire Kent State system.

In addition to serving as Professor of History, his service to the campus included Coordinator of Developmental Education program, Advisor to the History Club, Advisor to Student Government, Member of the Library Committee, Chair of the Student Grievance Committee, and President of Faculty Council.

He wrote a book review column for the Star Beacon from 1973 to 1979 known as "Kent Looks at Books".

Although quite modest and humble about his achievements, he was recognized with numerous awards including Outstanding Professor of the Year, Ashtabula Area College Committee Award in recognition of services to the KSUAC Library, and The Martlet Award in appreciation of continuous support and contributions to KSUAC.

He literally taught history to generations of Kent students. In his later years on the campus, he strode into the computer age as he began his 47th year as a history teacher at Kent State University, Ashtabula Campus.

His survivors include his daughter, Shelley McKay of Ashtabula; other special friends, Cheryl Lamont of Geneva, and her children, Samara Moliff of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Samantha Bolin of Fairborn, Ohio, Dawn VanDamia and her children, Amanda and Brennan Cook, all of Erie, Pennsylvania, Sayonara de Fatima Barbosa of Florinopolis, Brazil, and Barbara West of China; his brothers, Jim Birch, former professor of KSUAC, and Ron Helms, both of Ashtabula; his cousins, Theresa, Joann, and James Caponigro, all of New York; and his entire KSUAC Family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2006, in the Auditorium at Kent State University, Ashtabula Campus. Friends and associates may gather following the service in the Kent State John W. Zaback Blue and Gold Room from 3 to 4 p.m. Please bring a story or remembrance of Professor Nolan to share.

His final resting place will be the Garden Mausoleum of Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville.

WILLIE P. CARR



JEFFERSON - Willie Paul Carr, age 72, of State Route 322, Williamsfield Township, Ohio, died Wednesday afternoon, September 6, 2006, at Jefferson Health Care Center.

He was born October 2, 1933, in Florence, Mississippi, a son of the late Eugene and Willie Mae (Alexander) Carr, and had lived in this area since 1988, coming from Cleveland. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean Conflict. He married the former Catherine Trice on May 25, 1976, in Cleveland.

Mr. Carr was a member of the Central Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, and was also active with the Country Neighbor Program in Orwell and Andover.

Mr. Carr came from a family of 12 children, and is survived by a brother and two sisters, Fred Eugene Carr and Lucilla Moore, both of Florence, Mississippi, and Velma Wilson of Cleveland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Catherine in 2000; three sisters, Mary Lee McLaurinof, Lenora Carr, and Fannie Mae Carr; and five brothers, Melvin, Willie C. "Bill", Robert V., John Curtis "JC", and Jessie Carr.

Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m., Monday, September 11, 2006, at the Central Missionary Baptist Church, 930 Clay Road, Jefferson, with the Pastor Dave Chappell officiating. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at the church.

All contributions may be directed to the Central Missionary Baptist Church.

GERALD E. TAFT



CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS, Pa. - Gerald E. "Jerry" Taft, of Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, formerly of Penn Line, died Saturday, September 9, 2006, at Beverly Healthcare in Cambridge Springs where he had been a resident since April.

He was born August 3, 1927, in Springboro, a son of Clair and Florence Wheeler Taft. Jerry was of the Methodist Faith. He graduated from Linesville High School in 1946, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Jerry retired as 3rd Engineer on the Great Lakes Railroad.

He was a member of the Linesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842, the Linesville American Legion Post 462, the Pymatuning Sportsman's Club, the Penn Line Grange, the Penn Line Cemetery Association, and the National Rifle Association.

Jerry was often called by many "the Mayor of Penn Line."

He was excellent at fixing anything and enjoyed helping people.

An avid hunter, he traveled out west and to Canada on various hunting trips.

He is survived by six sisters, Sara O'Neil and her husband Bill of Ocala, Florida, Ruth Kleve and her husband Dan of Conneaut, Mary Boban and her husband Arnold of Springboro, Dorothy Parish and her husband Allen of Hemet, California, Bea Cunningham of Columbus, Ohio, and Donna Johns of Pittsburgh; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Taft of Jefferson; two brothers, James Taft of Mercer, and Frank Taft and his wife Barbara of Geneva, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Richard Keepler of Meadville, Pa.; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Jake.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Norman, and Richard Taft; and a sister, Shirley Keppler.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at ROYAL-COLEMAN FUNERAL HOME, 6028 U.S. Highway 6, Linesville, Pennsylvania.

The Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Lea A. Guiney of Polk and East Grove United Methodist churches officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will be in Penn Line Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Penn Line Cemetery Association, 6547 U.S. Highway 6, Linesville, Pennsylvania 16424.
