PITTSBURGH, Pa. —
Raymond “Ray” J. Brown, age 79, of Cochranton and formerly of Conneautville and Painesville, Ohio, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Monday evening, Feb. 6, 2012, following complications from his diabetes.
He was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Meadville, Pa., a son of the late Orion and Blanch (Rihel) Brown.
Ray retired from Elkem Metals, formerly Union Carbide, in Ashtabula, Ohio, after 30 years of service. He then worked for Lake County Postal Credit Union in Mentor, Ohio.
Following his retirement, he was active in the flea markets in Middlefield, Ohio, and Rogers, Ohio, as a vendor. He first started in business as a partner in Frank and Ray’s Drive-In Restaurant in Springboro.
He was president of Local 3081 US Steelworkers Union; he was a Notary Public; he was a member of the Small Time Investment Club; and he was a Primerica Securities Agent.
In his younger years, Ray was active in a bowling league. Ray enjoyed going to any casino, especially trips to Atlantic City and Erie. Above all, he loved family reunions and family gatherings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Brown; and two sisters, Irene Klinginsmith and Hazel Williams.
Survivors include his first wife, Mary Brown of Conneautville; his second wife, Virginia Copeland of Ashtabula, Ohio; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Brown of Conneautville and Nancy (Mark) Elder of Cochranton; five brothers and sisters, Esther Garwood of Connersville, Ind., Dave (Carol) Brown of Conneautville, Barb (Ruben) Mascitti of Meadville, Pa., Chuck (Darleen) Brown of Meadville, Pa., and Bill (Kathy) Brown of Cochranton; a sister-in-law, Judy Brown of Boonville, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Bob Williams of Cochranton; many nieces and nephews; and especially his cat, “Felix”.
Friends may call at the MATTERA FUNERAL HOME, 188 East State St., Albion, Pa., on Thursday, Feb. 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a Funeral Service there on Friday, Feb. 10th, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Spring Cemetery, Springboro, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ray’s name to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St., Alexandria, Va. 22311.
