Gerald B. Swartz Jr.

MARION — Gerald “Jerry” Bernard Swartz Jr. passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, leaving us a legacy of love, laughter and life.

Born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 16, 1929, to Gerald Bernard and Marcella (Arnold) Swartz. He graduated from Hower Trade School in 1945. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his daughter-in-law, Leonie (Gibbs) Swartz. In 1952, he married Josephine Valle and they shared a wonderful marriage for 61 years. Jerry served in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War.

In 1955, he began a career in management and moved his family to Cleveland. In 1968, Jerry became a supervisor for an Arby’s franchise. In 1972, he joined the Arby’s parent corporation and within three years he became a Regional Director of Operations. In 1980, he became an Arby’s franchisee in Marion, Ohio.

Throughout his life he enjoyed his leisure time to the fullest with his family, which invariably involved travel, a passion of his.  There were extensive cross-country camping trips, Lake Erie sailing adventures, ocean resort stays and numerous golf outings.  His travels would take him and Josephine around the world. His hobbies included duplicate bridge, golf, table tennis and books.  Still another interest included his love for jazz.

As a supportive brother, Marilyn (Swartz) Lux will remember his kindness. His children, Christina (Chester) Sumpter, Gerald (Christine), Tim, Craig (Camille), Paul (Catherine), and Andrew (Rebecca) will cherish the memory of the wisdom he bestowed upon them. He will also be deeply missed by his 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; long time family member, Scott Monachino; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Jerry Robinson.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21st, at Boler Activity Center, located on the Marion Catholic Campus, 590 Forest Lawn Blvd, where Parish Prayers will be held at 4 p,m.
