CONNEAUT — Edward Ralph “Ed” Bates Sr., died at UH-Geauga Hospital on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.
He was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Warren, Mich., the son of Robert E. and Rena M. (Smith) Bates.
Ed worked as a welder for Terex Manufacturing for many years. He enjoyed cheering for the Cleveland Browns, always believing that next year would be better, fishing and golf. He was an excellent woodworker, carrying on his father’s design of the quarter moon with stair steps; his own “Stairway to the Stars”. A man blessed with a great sense of humor, he could keep you laughing for hours.
Ed will be remembered for his great smile, his woodworking talents, and his love for his family.
Ed is survived by his children, Dale (Beverly) Bates of Dayton, Roy Bates of York, Pa., Beverly Bates of Hubbard, Ohio, Edward (Rebecca) Bates Jr. of Deerfield and Raymond Bates of Ravenna; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Arthur J. Bates of Fayette, N.C. and Olive E. Schultz of Chardon.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dawn Marie Prince; his brothers, Everett S. and Walter W. Bates; and his parents.
Funeral Service will be held 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 26th, at ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with the Rev. Mary S. Dickerhoof, pastor of God’s Church of Deliverance, officiating. Burial will be In Saybrook Cemetery.
Calling Hours will be observed from 11 a.m. until time of Service, Monday, at the Funeral Home.
