He sailed 10 years on the Great Lakes and enlisted in the Merchant Marines, during World War II and served his country with great pride from Dec. 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945, until he was honorably discharged. He was a Charter Member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter American Merchant Marine Veterans.

Herb retired in 1981 from the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co. as a structural repairman after 29 years of service.

Herb and his wife were among the original founders of the Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings held at the Conneaut Savings and Loan parking lot, then at Rite Aid and later at the Conneaut Human Resource Center lot. He took great pride in his vegetable garden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister at a very young age; his wife, Lucille Ruccolo Mononen in April 2006, whom he married on Jan. 5, 1947, after 59 years of marriage; and his brother, Oiva Mononen.

Herb is survived by his brother, John and wife, Jean Mononen; his sister-in-law, Arlene Mononen; and several nieces and nephews.
