KINGSVILLE — Harry Gaines Sr., age 92, of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville.
Harry was born in Geneva, Ohio, on August 9, 1920, the son of Arthur and Anna Gaines.
A Veteran of the U.S. Army, he served under General Mark Clark in the 5th Army, 405th Engineering Water Battalion, serving in North Africa, Italy and Sicily. Later, Harry worked as a metal fabricator and also in the Buckeye School system.
Harry coached Little League and American League baseball for over 20 years. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by sons, Brian (Cindy) Gaines of Rome, Ohio, Harry Jr. (Jean) of Ashtabula and Scott (Brenda) Gaines of Weaverville, N.C.; grandchildren, Kristine (Jaime) Laveck, Jason (Lori) Gaines, Steven (Suzie) Gaines, Brian Chad (Christine) Gaines, Christopher (Nickie) Gaines and Brandon (Jolene) Gaines; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marilyn of Saybrook and Marrian of Geneva.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura in 2006; sister, Verna Spellman; and brother, Merle Gaines.
Private Graveside Services will be held at a later date.
