JEFFERSON —
Was Mia Bordonaro going to lose?
No way! Those boys were going down.
The 8-year-old Boardman resident came to the Ashtabula County Fair to win the pizza-eating contest, and she took the 2-8-year-old category with cheesy ease.
Mia edged out first-runner up Joe Burns by a pepperoni.
Joe, also 8, hails from Jefferson.
The two top pizza-eating machines came with their very own fan clubs, too.
Joe’s shouted, “Go Joe Go,” and Mia’s cheered, “Chew Mia Chew!”
In the end, each one of them took home a prize package of toys.
Joe’s tummy was a bit unsettled though — “I almost threw up,” he said.
In the 9-12 age group, Damien McMahon, 11, sucked the pizza in and then chewed it up. The vacuum method quickly ended the contest.
Second place went to Cody Chambers, 12, of Kinsman.
Carmen Pellegrino, 15, of Jefferson, gnawed and chewed his way to victory in the 13-17 age category, as his groupies cheered him on.
“He loves food,” said his friend Shelby Morgan, of Jefferson.
Carmen said he entered a cookie-eating contest once, but didn’t win.
“The pizza-eating contest was more fun,” he said.
Domino’s Pizza supplied several pepperoni pizzas for the contest.
