COLUMBUS —
A coalition pushing changes to the way Ohio draws legislative and congressional districts expects to have more than enough signatures to qualify the proposed constitutional amendment for the fall ballot.
Voters First Ohio estimated signatures to be submitted to the Ohio secretary of state’s office before Saturday’s midnight deadline would push the total number over 700,000.
Secretary of State Jon Husted (HYOO’-sted) ruled July 17 that the group’s previous submission was more than 130,000 shy of the roughly 385,000 signatures needed.
Voter First Chairwoman Catherine Turcer says the group will hold a news conference Monday to release the final number.
The proposal aims to take away map-drawing powers from elected officials and put them in the hands of a 12-person citizen commission.
The Ohio Republican Party is fighting the proposal.
