Local leaders share their expertise during luncheon programs at GRA

AUSTINBURG — A leader is someone who guides others toward a common goal and helps those around him make positive choices. A leader makes good decisions, is organized, focused, decisive and confident. People look up to and follow leaders; they are passionate about what they do and willing to share information.

Over the past two years, Grand River Academy has had luncheons on campus with prominent figures in the regional community. These luncheons consist of the local leaders expounding on information about their fields and careers. They describe how they got to the place where they are, the obstacles they had to overcome, and even what they would do differently.

These luncheons are held at The Bud Field Student Center once every few months. This program, which is known as “Lunch with a Leader,” allows senior Grand River Academy students to learn what the interview process is like, how to form a résumé, what to say at an interview. Future programs will talk about the value of budgeting and banking as well as the value of community service and entrepreneurship.

Most recently, Grand River Academy had the pleasure of having Kevin Miller, chief executive officer of the Ashtabula County Medical Center, speak at one of the luncheons. Twenty seniors along with some staff members had lunch and listened to Mr. Miller share some of his thoughts on how to make the best impression in a job interview. Mr. Miller advised students on how to conduct oneself at an interview as well as what to expect. He passed out an informative packet that dealt with the interview process to all of the students. Mr. Miller gave really valuable advice to the students, and he stressed how important community service and internships are on a résumé.

GRA seniors also had the pleasure of meeting George Milbourn, who owned COE Manufacturing in Painesville. He is the chairman of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation. Mr. Milbourn talked to seniors about finding their strengths.

“It’s hard to be good at everything,” said Mr. Milbourn, “but it’s important to identify your own talents, and then have good people around you to fill in the gaps.”

He reminded the students that the first impression is the most lasting. Mr. Milbourn also told of what kind of people he hired, and he stressed how important it was to seek a good education, and continue to challenge yourself throughout your life.

“The program gives us opportunities to see leaders in the real world,” said senior Andrew Prior.

Students were surprised to meet the high ranking men. Television has portrayed CEOs to be loud, apathetic people who only care about themselves. Mr. Miller and Mr. Milbourn were the complete opposites of this stereotype. They informed the students that a good leader cares about those who work under them. An unhappy employee causes an unproductive business.

Grand River Academy hopes to have a few more lunches with leaders before the school year ends. Future guests include Steven Varkette, the vice president of the Andover Bank.
