ASHTABULA — As many students know, March is one of the slowest months of the school year. In anticipation for spring break, everything seems to be in slow motion. Sports like baseball, tennis and track are just beginning. The third quarter of the Ss. John and Paul school year ends on Friday so students and teachers are making sure everything is caught up. There are still more than two months left until graduation. Thankfully there have been events to break up the monotony, like the school open house on March 12, auditions for the school play, the Ohio Graduation Test, St. Patrick’s Day and the Scholastic Bowl.
Rehearsals began on March 23 for this year’s school play entitled “Cinderella and the Glass Slipper.” This classic tale in the form of a musical is being directed by Jillion Negin and choreographed by Lisa-Marie French.
The faculty adviser, Marilou McClimans, is very excited about the musical. “I am looking forward to working with Jillion Negin and the 40-some students who have auditioned for “Cinderella and the Glass Slipper,” said Mrs. McClimans. “It stars Priscilla Clarke as Cinderella and Michael Zullo as Prince Charming. The supporting cast includes Paige Heidrich as the stepmother; Tiffani Murphy as the fairy godmother; Clare Hamalainen as Brunhilda, an ugly step-sister; and Giulia Giancola as Cleopatra, the other ugly step-sister.”
The performances will be held at O’Leary Hall at Mother of Sorrows May 8, 9 and 10. This is a must-see play and there will most definitely be a huge turnout.
The SSJP sophomores have just recently recovered from OGT week. After yearlong preparation and outstanding help from teachers, The Ohio Graduation Test was held March 16 through March 20, with tests alternating between morning and afternoon. On Monday morning students took the reading portion, Tuesday afternoon students took the mathematics portion, Wednesday morning students took the writing portion, Thursday afternoon students took the science portion, and on Friday morning students took the social studies portion. In preparation for the test sophomores took an OGT prep class for half of the year. Also, there was a three-day weekend before the test for students to prepare.
With the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day, the students at the Mount Carmel Campus were treated to a surprise visit from a “magical leprechaun.” The students watched to catch a glimpse of the sneaky leprechaun and were delighted to see him creep around the school. Students at both buildings also celebrated the holiday by wearing green to school that day.
On April 2, the Ss. John and Paul Scholastic Bowl team will enter the area competition held at Pymatuning Valley High School. The team, which consists of juniors Alex Iarocci and Ryan Colby and sophomore Michael Simrak, will be competing against the best and the brightest young minds from Ashtabula County in their quest to become Scholastic Bowl champions. Guided by adviser Jennifer Allan, the team has been very busy this year, and participated in the News Channel 5 scholastic competition where they took second place.
The annual Career Day at Ss. John and Paul will take place on April 3. Many professionals from the area have offered to speak at this event. Former SSJP graduate Jared Kaplin will be providing disc jockey entertainment in the gym, and many local business have donated prizes to give away that day.
Thankfully March has been going by at an even pace, allowing everyone time to actually enjoy it before it passes by. Also, the activities that took place and the good weather helped make things a lot easier.

Vocational school welcomes hundreds of future students, parents at orientation
“Back to school” might seem like a weird statement seeing how we are just about done with the school year, but on April 20 students from across the county turned out at the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School to look at the facilities and meet with teachers and school officials. People began arriving before the event’s official starting time of 6:30 p.m.; more than 500 people attended during the evening.
