ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — All the talk about The “Twilight” Vampire Series has Edgewood students exposing their veins. The National Honor Society is holding the second blood drive of the year. The Red Cross will be in the Warriors gym on March 29. The drive lasts from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the public. Walk-ins are more than welcome because Edgewood is trying to reach a goal of 82 pints. The last time NHS hosted the blood drive on Dec. 3, 2009, they surpassed their goal with 87 pints and earned $500 in scholarship money. Advisers Dave Fowler and Laura Buckius hope to see a big turnout.
In the spirit of humanitarianism, Edgewood will be heading to the Kent State Model United Nations conference by adviser Ryan Sardella. The Kent State conference is one of the biggest in the region and will be held at Kent State University Ashtabula Campus on March 30 through April 1.
Each delegation, usually consisting of two students, represents a country in a council. Examples of councils being represented are Security Council, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Commission on the Status of Women, Commission on Narcotic Drugs and Historical Security Council.
“Model U.N. is a great experience for not only public speaking skills, but also learning diplomacy and international relations,” said Edgewood Model U.N. member, Megan Kelly, Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
Sophomores all across the state of Ohio will be taking the Ohio Graduation Test during the week of March 15-19. Each day, students will take a different test in a subject area of mathematics, reading, social studies, science and writing.
To aid in testing success, Edgewood will provide breakfast daily for all students taking the test. Also during OGT week, students who are not testing are to arrive two hours later than normal; however, buses will run at regular schedule. Last year Edgewood attained an excellent rating for achieving great test scores; hopefully they can keep up the good work.
“Edgewood has been preparing its students for the OGT by giving Short Cycle Assessment tests that model the OGT. There has been a building-wide initiative in writing across the curriculum and all instruction is standards-based,” said Principal Karl Williamson.
Speaking of academics, the Edgewood Scholastic Bowl Team competed in the 23rd annual Scholastic Bowl on March 1. The Edgewood team consisted of captain Lindey Campagne, Emily Stolfer and Jennifer Meranda; and alternates Agustin Roderiguez, Caitlyn Wentz and Rick Stephenson. The team was advised by Michelle Sardella and Laura Buckius.
“We were really proud of our team. They answered some tough questions and all of their practicing was evident. Our next goal is to recruit team members for next year. We are sad to see these guys go,” said adviser Michelle Sardella.
The Warrior Symphonic and Concert bands have been preparing for District Band Contest all year and it is finally here. On Saturday they are traveling to Howland High School to perform in front of judges. Bands are required to play three pieces of music: one from a required list, one march or chorale and one piece of the director’s choice.
Concert band is playing “Fidelity March” by Karl King, “Rampage” by Todd Stalter and “Sparks” by Brian Balmages. Symphonic band is performing “El Relicario” by Jose Padilla, “First Suite in E For Military Band” by Gustav Holst and “The Gathering at the Ranks of Hebron” by David Holsinger.
“I am excited to go to districts,” said Sam Wyand, senior Symphonic Band member. “I hope we pull together as a band to go farther than districts because it would be a grand opportunity.”
The other bands that will be at Howland are Grand Valley, Champion, Lakeside, Mineral Ridge, Jefferson, Niles McKinley, Hubbard, Lakeview, Bristol, Conneaut, Warren G. Harding, Mathews and Howland.
Weekends at Edgewood aren’t always work and no play. On March 5 the Winter Ball was a black and white extravaganza. Students reported to Edgewood late after school hours for the Black and White Masquerade. Spanish Club hosted the dance by selling tickets and decorating. Students danced from 8 to 11 p.m. to disc jockey, Joel Miller. The 2010 Winter Ball court was Rick Stephenson, Eric Meier, Brian Joslin, Jayson Gage, Donald Rylance, Devon Anderson and Dillon Hutton. Gage was named the King.

Vocational school welcomes hundreds of future students, parents at orientation
“Back to school” might seem like a weird statement seeing how we are just about done with the school year, but on April 20 students from across the county turned out at the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School to look at the facilities and meet with teachers and school officials. People began arriving before the event’s official starting time of 6:30 p.m.; more than 500 people attended during the evening.
