The school year is winding down and the students of Conneaut High School are ready to partake in end of the year festivities. Upperclassmen are making their final arrangements for prom which will take place on May 15. This year’s prom will be a ’50s theme: “At the Hop.”
To kick off prom weekend, motivational speaker Chris Johnson will come to CHS to encourage safe behavior on prom night. In the past, Johnson has performed both magic and hypnotist acts. The event will take place during the school day on May 14 for all upperclassmen.
“I think that it’s going to be just as funny as it was last year, if not even better; and everyone will get a kick out of it,” said senior Nichele Johnson.
On May 15 prom celebrations will begin at 5 p.m. in CHS Garcia Gymnasium with Conneaut’s tradition of a walkthrough promenade. At walkthrough, students show off their glamorous dresses and tuxedos for all to see. Students will then board the bus for Rainbow Garden Ballroom. The event will be catered by Teresa’s Deli of Erie and will feature chicken, meatloaf, pizza and wings.
Junior Josh Callahan is excited about the great food. “I think it is great that there are so many options. Especially the wings and pizza, they’re not your usual prom food,” he said.
It will also feature music provided by D.J. Henry GQ of Club 104.
Senior Chris Nyman is pumped for dancing. “It’s a chance to make a fool of yourself and no one really cares,” he said.
The night is sure to be one to remember with glow sticks, light up glasses and unlimited fruit smoothies.
“The smoothies sound really good, but they also might mean a lot of restroom breaks,” Nyman jokingly said. “The light up glasses will also be cool.”
Junior class adviser Anthony Evans feels that this year’s prom could be the best in a while. “Everyone put a lot of work into the preparation and I’m really excited to see it all come together,” Evans said.
Immediately following prom, students will be bused to Splash Lagoon to begin the after-prom party. Students will receive a $10 arcade pass and a pizza party in addition to being able to enjoy the waterslides.
“We’ve never done anything like that before and I think it will be a really cool experience,” said senior Carla Belnap. “I’ve never been there so I’m excited to try out some gnarly waterslides.”
The students will be at Splash Lagoon until early morning. They will then be bused back to Conneaut High School where the prom festivities will come to a close.
“Prom is always a fun way to end the year, and I anticipate a lot of memories to be made, especially with the addition of after-prom at Splash Lagoon. I think it’s great that at CHS we have students and advisers who go out of their way to make sure the night is truly memorable,” says senior Alexandra Nardo.

Vocational school welcomes hundreds of future students, parents at orientation
“Back to school” might seem like a weird statement seeing how we are just about done with the school year, but on April 20 students from across the county turned out at the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School to look at the facilities and meet with teachers and school officials. People began arriving before the event’s official starting time of 6:30 p.m.; more than 500 people attended during the evening.
