Mitchel Hokavar has been a key component of the Perry Pirates football team for two seasons already. If his performance in Game 1 of the 2010 season is any indication, he’s doing a fine job of playing a game of Can You Top This? with himself.
In seasons past, Hokavar has been a force on defense for the Pirates, earning All-Ohio honors in the defensive backfield as a sophomore. In his junior year, assuming the duties as Perry’s starting quarterback, he tied Grand Valley’s A.J. Henson for the Star Beacon area lead in touchdown passes with 16 and was third in the area in passing yardage with 1,199 yards.
Hokavar is stamping himself as a potential Division I recruit as a quarterback this year. He certainly didn’t do any damage to those thoughts in Perry’s 49-14 victory over Riverside on the opening week.
Actually, Hokavar did the job with his legs and his arm. He racked up 101 yards rushing on just 13 carries and scored on runs of five, nine and 13 yards. He was equally efficient as a passer, completing 17-of-25 passes for 247 yards and touchdown throws of 10 and 11 yards to Anthony Kukwa, yet another Division I prospect for the Pirates.
For his performance, Hokavar has been chosen the Star Beacon-Ringer Screen Print Player of the Week. He will receive a special award courtesy of John Ringer, proprietor of the business in North Kingsville.
