D-III guys face uphill battle

MAPLE HEIGHTS — Area competitors in the Division III district tournament will have an uphill battle to qualify for the state tournament.

No area wrestlers are in today’s championship semifinals at approximately 11 a.m. at Maple Heights High School. Consolation wrestling begins at 9 a.m.

Wrestlers are trying to earn one of four places to the state tournament available at each weight. Championship and consolation finals are at 6:30 p.m., with those wrestlers already having claimed berths in the state tournament next Thursday through Saturday at Value City Arena in Columbus.

Pymatuning Valley’s Zach Campbell (119), Zach Jones (135), Jacob Brown (145) and Drew Skleres (215) each won their first matches, but lost in the second round. They have a somewhat better chance to battle back for a place, but they must win their next two matches to do so.

PV also had five losses in the first round. They went to Kyle Conger (125), Zach Benedict (130), Nick Stasiak (152), Chuck Crowther (171) and Zane Feydo (189).

Three Grand Valley wrestlers — R.J. Riley (140), Sean Szitas (145) and Logan Nye (189) — also lost in the first round.
