Pink Friday tonight at Conneaut

Spartans host Warriors on Cancer Awareness Night

When the Edgewood Warriors and Conneaut Spartans boys basketball teams meet at Garcia Gymnasium tonight, the rival schools will be united under a common theme — cancer awareness.

The Spartan basketball team and Conneaut High School National Honor Society will hold the second annual Cancer Awareness Night with fans of both teams encouraged to wear pink to the game to support the cause.

“The idea was presented to me by NHS advisor Emily Wacker,” Conneaut coach Tim Tallbacka said. “They provide the food for the bake sale and had the idea for fans to wear pink.”

While fans of both teams couldn’t have different opinions of who they want to win, they will be in unison in support of the cause.

Edgewood coach John Bowler, whose mother-in-law passed away of cancer, said he thinks it’s a great idea to have the event tonight.

“Any time I can support that cause I’m happy to,” Bowler said. “I think it’s a great idea with two rival schools coming together and we’ll do anything we can to supoprt it.

“I definitely encourage everyone to wear pink tonight.”

In addition to fans wearing pink there will also be a bake sale, 50-50 raffle and a moment of silence prior to the game to honor loved ones lost to cancer.

“This is an issue that is close to all of us,” Tallbacka said. “Every person in the gym knows  someone who has been affected by cancer.”

Edgewood defeated Conneaut at home 52-43 on Jan. 11 in the first matchup between the two rivals this season.
