Coming home!

Ashtabula’s Urban Meyer will headline the 2012 Touchdown Club banquet

Here’s some advice for those who plan on attending the 2012 Ashtabula County Touchdown Club dinner and awards banquet:

Get your tickets early... as in, now!

Urban Meyer has always had nothing but great things to say about growing up in Ashtabula.

Turns out, though, the 1982 St. John High School graduate is one of those rare individuals who actually backs up his words with his actions.

Meyer, the head football coach of the 10-0 Ohio State Buckeyes, has committed to being the keynote speaker at the Touchdown Club’s 2012 event, slated for Monday, Dec. 3 at the Mount Carmel Community Center.

This comes on the heels of him being the headliner for a free youth football camp organized by Dana Schulte of Media One that was held last summer at the Spire Institute in Harpersfield Township that attracted hundreds of youngsters.

Not to mention what the former Herald great, himself a member of the Ashtabula County Football Hall of Fame, has done behind the scenes for so many organizations and individuals from this area through the years.

From helping former Jefferson star Angelo Mirando to get his start as a college football assistant coach, to taking part in many fundraisers in support of the late John Buskirk during his courageous battles against a disease that eventually took his life, Meyer has always continued to support the communities and the people who helped give him his start along the path that led him not only to Ohio State, but also to two BCS national championships as head coach of the Florida Gators.

Members of the first-team unit of the 2012 Star Beacon All-Ashtabula County football team will be on hand and introduced Dec. 3 and the members of the Class of 2012 Ashtabula County Hall of Fame will be inducted. They will be introduced by retired Star Beacon sports writer Chris Larick.

Tickets are $30 each or $240 for a table of eight and can be purchased by contacting George Bellios at 821-8257, 358-8330 or 479-2856.

Here’s the... kicker — tickets MUST be purchased presale. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door once they are gone.

The event is co-sponsored by the Star Beacon and the Touchdown Club.
