A Don McCormack column: Brown has local connection

Paying a visit to the variety store...

Local tie

The newest Cleveland Brown has a connection to Ashtabula County.

The team cut backup offensive lineman Billy Yates among their moves made Tuesday and signed offensive lineman Steve Vallos (pronounced, VAL-ose).

Thanks to column contributor Bill Bodnar, we know Vallos’ father, Bill, works for Delta Railroad Construction, an Ashtabula company.

The Browns claimed Vallos off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. He played in all 16 games in each of the past two seasons for the Seahawks, where he was with Browns president Mike Holmgren.

Vallos’ 48 starts at Wake Forest University are a school record for the Demon Deacons.

What a rush!

There were not a lot of statistical marvels for the area during Week 2 of the 2010 high school football season, but a few individuals did reach some benchmarks during their respective contests.

Two area running backs broke the 100-yard mark in lugging the pigskin, making it back-to-back such performances for each of them to open the 2010 season.

Madison’s Josh March had 108 yards on 15 carries in the Blue Streaks’ 42-6 thrashing of visiting Geneva on Friday night at Blue Streak Memorial Stadium. He also hauled in an 82-yard scoring strike from quarterback Andy Karlson.

Pymatuning Valley’s Nick Marshall had 103 yards on 23 rushes in the Lakers’ 22-7 victory at Cardinal on Friday night. Included in Marshall’s efforts were touchdown jaunts of 25 and 7 yards.

Passing fancy

Three area quarterbacks surpassed the century mark in terms of yardage during Week 2 and all three signal callers led their respective teams to victory.

Karlson made good on 9 of 16 attempts in Madison’s triumph against visiting Geneva, piling up 182 yards in the process. In addition to his 82-yard touchdown heave to March, he connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jake Skelton.

Perry’s Mitchel Hokavar had 137 yards, completing 8-16 attempts, in the Pirates’ 42-10 demolition of visiting Harvey on Friday night at Alumni Stadium. Hokavar had a 12-yard touchdown connection to favorite target Anthony Kukwa.

In his first varsity start, sophomore Lou Wisnyai made quite an impression for the Edgewood Warriors, nailing 4 of his 5 attempts for 119 yards, including a 41-yard scoring strike to Matt Anderson and a 32-yarder to Devin McCaleb. He also ran the football three times for 42 yards, including a 48-yard fourth-quarter scoring scamper.

Not catching on

For the second consecutive week, no area receiver put together a 100-yard game in their Week 2 encounters.

Leagues of their own
