Despite facing All-American and Ohio State signee Amy Scullion and her highly regarded Salem Quaker teammates on their home floor at John Cabas Gymnasium, Jefferson found itself down only six — at 40-34 — entering the fourth quarter Saturday night.
However, at that point, the Falcons went cold, with Lizzy Ziemski’s turnaround off the glass with two minutes to play being their only basket, and it resulted in a 49-36 loss.
Scullion, a 6-foot-2 point guard and a first-team All-Ohioan, had a monster night, scoring 26 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and adding 5 steals and 3 blocked shots for the Quakers (9-2), who are considered the heavy favorite to win the Division II distrct championship at Austintown Fitch this season.
Jefferson (8-5) received 12 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks from its All-Ohioan, Ziemski, while Hannah Francis had 7 points and 5 assists and Sam Morford chipped in with 10 rebounds and 2 rejections.
n Pymatuning Valley 60, Badger 32 — A near triple-double by point guard Olivia Holt powered the Lakers to a convincing victory Saturday afternoon over the Braves and kept the Lakers undefeated in Northeastern Athletic Conference play. Holt scored 17 points, stole the ball 10 times and dished out nine assists, as well as blocking three shots. Nicole Virostek added 14 points, Brooke Monnolly had 10 and Kayla Martin added nine to offset 19 points by Badger’s Sarah Bonar.
The Lakers (11-2, 7-0) scored in double figures in each quarter of the game and limited the Braves (5-9) to single digits in each instance. PV held a 16-8 lead after the first quarter, increased it to 33-15 at halftime and built it to 45-23 after three quarters.
n Youngstown Christian 49, SS. John and Paul 39 2 OT — The Heralds rallied from a 14-7 deficit after the first quarter to tie the game at 35 after regulation, sent the game into a second overtime tied at 37, but couldn’t overcome the Eagles in the second extra session. Kristina Krumins led SJP (3-10) with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Carly Penna also scored 11 points. Kristi Cooper led Youngstown Christian (6-5) with 15 points, while Sara Bell added 13.
Wrestling
A second place at 130 pounds by Thomas Butryn led Edgewood to a 10th place out of 17 teams in the Clash of the Champions tournament at Warren, Mich. The Warriors finished with 88 1/2 points to 177 for Roseville, Mich. Edgewood also received a second from Travis Dickey at 112 pounds and fifths from Zach Williamson (103) and Christian Severino (140).
n Howland Invitational — Lakeside finished ninth with 40 points in the 49th annual tournament, which was won by the host Tigers with 224 points. Shawn Dell led the Dragons with a second at 160, while Connor Dickey (140) and Zach McClintock (152) each finished fourth.
Boys basketball
Perry rallied from deficits of 19-9 after the first quarter and 34-20 at halftime to tie its non-conference game with Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin at 54 at the end of regulation, then dominate overtime for a 65-60 victory. Anthony Kukwa had a huge game for the Pirates (3-6) with 20 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots, while James McCallister added 13 points and Erik Petrecca had 10. That overcame 21 points from Sean Martin and 16 from Maurice O’Field for NDCL (5-5).
Indoor track
Four area athletes turned in fine performances Saturday at the Tri-State Track Indoor GaREAT Event at the GaREAT complex in Harpersfield Township. The Tri-State organization involves schools from Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
Madison’s Grant Isdale had the day’s outstanding performance for area competitors by placing second of all competitors in the 60-meter dash in 7.16 seconds.
Fellow Blue Streak Bobby Bismark was seventh overall in the 400-meter dash in 55.75.
In the boys mile, Geneva’s Drew Avsec finished 16th overall in 5:00.0, while Madison’s Konner Lashley was 17th in 5:01.0.
