With one exception, the seedings for the first round of the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association Freshman Girls Basketball Tournament ran true to form Tuesday at Geneva High School.
That exception was made in the tournament’s opening game as fifth-seeded Lakeside earned a 26-22 victory over fourth-seeded Jefferson. In other action, second-seeded Chardon defeated seventh-seeded Conneaut, 25-11, and third-seeded Riverside topped sixth-seeded Edgewood, 26-12.
n Lakeside 26, Jefferson 22 — Ten points from Shelby Smith and nine from Nicole Rock powered the Dragons (5-8) past the Falcons. Sarah Elizabeth Busch scored 11 points and Giulia Giancola had six for Jefferson (2-6).
n Riverside 26, Edgewood 12 — Danielle Protak had seven points and Natalie Pace added six to lead the Beavers (7-10) to the semifinals. Julie Rich led Edgewood (3-8) with five points.
n Chardon 25, Conneaut 11 — Hannah Tegel led the Hilltoppers (12-5) into the semifinals with seven points. Angie Zappitelli paced the Spartans (0-1) with eight points.
Lakeside will play top-seeded Geneva in the upper-bracket semifinal in the main gymnasium at Geneva at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Riverside and Chardon will meet in the lower-bracket semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the main gym.
Edgewood and Conneaut will play in the opening round of losers’-bracket action in Geneva’s auxiliary gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Jefferson will meet the winner of that game at 1 p.m. Saturday in the auxiliary gym.
The tournament championship will be played at 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the main gym.

Riverside sneaks past Edgewood
Riverside wrestling coach Scott Blank learned a good deal of what he knows from Edgewood coach Greg Stolfer as a former Warrior great. Thursday, he used a bit of that knowledge to get the better of his old coach as the Beavers bested the Warriors, 31-28, at Edgewood.

Madison rolls past Geneva
Madison recovered from coming out on the short end of a pin in the first match of the night by taking six of the next seven matches against Geneva and capped the night with pins from their last pair of grapplers in dismantling the Eagles, 49-17.
