Roundup: Falcons get defensive in OT victory

Gina Chiacchiero’s steal and assist to Lizzy Ziemski in transition put Jefferson ahead, 44-42, and the Falcons played defense for the final 39 seconds and claimed the overtime victory over Girard, Pa. on Tuesday night at the Girard Holiday Tournament.

The win, the fourth straight for the Falcons (5-3) avenges a 46-17 drubbing at the hands of the host Yellow Jackets in the same event a year ago.

Ziemski had 21 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter and OT, to go with 12 rebounds, four blocks, four assists and five steals.

She was backed up by Hannah Francis (8 points, 4 rebounds), who scored Jefferson’s other hoop in the extra session, and point guard Joslin Landis (7 points, 6 assists, 5 steals).

Jefferson will play Seneca, Pa. at Girard today (4 p.m. JV tipoff).

n Fairport 40, SJP 31 — Serena Rodriquez scored 17 points to lead Fairport, while teammate Halie Butler added 10. Krissy Gallo led SJP with 13 points.

n Newbury 38, Grand Valley 19 — Kristen McClintock led Grand Valley’s offense with eight points, while Emily Nye and Tayler Schimley each added four.



Boys basketball

n Riverside 64, Chardon 57 — Chris Jefferies scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds to lead Riverside, while Dan Shafer added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Mychael Delano scored 16. Chardon was led by Brett Reiter with 16 points and Jake Hollinger with 12.

n Fairport 67, SJP 23 — Ralph Pugliese scored nine points to lead SJP, with Alex Iarocci adding five.

n Chagrin Falls 73, Jefferson 33 — Matt Moyer led Jefferson with 10 points. Connor Cleveland, Adam Mehalic and Johnny Knight each added six for the Falcons.

n University 80, Madison 49 — Richard Morrow scored 20 points to lead University and Jack Bentz put up 18 points and Jordan Berham 13. Tyler Richmond led Madison with 15 points, attributed to five 3-pointers. Nick Mayer added nine points.

n General McLane 69, Conneaut 50 — Nick Lombardo scored 26 points to lead McLane. Conneaut was led by Andrew Bunnell with 12 and Chris Howland with 10.



Wrestling

Pymatuning Valley fell just one point shy of winning it’s own tournament, the Laker Shaker.

The Lakers fell to Hickory, Pa., 31-30, in the championship match and finished 4-1 in the tournament. They won the Gold Pool by defeating Poland, 71-11, Austintown Fitch, 63-12, Conneaut, 42-31, annd Sharpsville, 33-25.

Conneaut downed Cambridge Springs, 51-27, to finish third. The Spartans defeated Sharpsville, 43-46, and Fitch, 52-24, in the Gold Pool. Their only loss came to the Lakers.

Chagrin Falls finished fifth, Sharpsville sixth, Wickliffe seventh, Fitch eighth, Brookfield ninth and Poland 10th.

Patrick Sanford of Conneaut claimed the most pins in the least amount of time. He pinned his five opponents in a total of 2:06.

Hickory’s Aaron Mills was named tournament MVP.



Freshmen

The Lakeside girls outscored Jefferson, 20-4, over the final three quarters to claim the Lakeside Tournament championship with a 28-13 win.

Shelly Smith tallied 10 points, Yasmine Singletary added eight and Nicole Rock scored six for the Dragons (3-2).

Sarah Busch led the Falcons with seven points.
