Edgewood, Geneva lead all-county squad

The Edgewood and Geneva girls soccer teams ruled the roost when it came to Ashtabula County.

The Warriors and Eagles were each unbeaten when it came to playing county competition. Each finished with a 4-0-1 record in the county, leading to their coaches, Juli Meaney and Katie Carter, respectively, being named Star Beacon Ashtabula County Co-Coaches of the Year.

Edgewood was 8-5-2 overall this season and Geneva was 7-6-4 (2-1-3 in its first season in the Premier Athletic Conference).

Geneva’s Jillian Nazor recorded seven shutouts, made 92 saves and scored a goal to be named the Player of the Year. It is the second time she won the award, the first being her freshman season of 2006.

Joining Nazor on the All-County first team are Geneva teammates senior Kelly Ollis, sophomore Emma Kingzett and freshman Morgan Nazor.

Edgewood senior Alyssa DiBenedetto and sophomores Alana Candela, Caity Mills and Morgan Stemple are also members of the first team.

They are joined by Conneaut senior Rebecca Williams, Pymatuning Valley senior Olivia Holt and junior Tessa Kellar, Lakeside senior Mattie Stowell and sophomore Emmy Stowell and Jefferson senior Stephanie Cole.

On the second team are Edgewood senior Megan Socko and sophomores Grace Kendzerski, Maggie Meaney and Julianne Newsome.

Geneva representatives on the second team are senior Suelen Gutierrez, junior Stacy Mead and sophomore Amie Brookes.

They are joined by Conneaut senior Sadie Duris and junior Holly Spees, Jefferson senior Gina Chiacchiero, Lakeside senior Keiko Sand and PV juniors Nicole Virostek, Lauren Seman and Brooke Monnolly.

    Riverside wrestling coach Scott Blank learned a good deal of what he knows from Edgewood coach Greg Stolfer as a former Warrior great. Thursday, he used a bit of that knowledge to get the better of his old coach as the Beavers bested the Warriors, 31-28, at Edgewood.

    Madison recovered from coming out on the short end of a pin in the first match of the night by taking six of the next seven matches against Geneva and capped the night with pins from their last pair of grapplers in dismantling the Eagles, 49-17.
