Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13, won the second round of competition in the Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest at Lakeside Intermediate School’s Ball Gymnasium on Saturday and have been named Ashtabula area champions.
First-place trophies were awarded to one boy and one girl in each of three categories: ages 8-9, 10-11, 12-13. Winners also received a certificate of achievement, a basketball and a limousine ride to the district finals, courtesy of Ducro Services. Second-place trophies were also awarded in each category.
The 2009-10 winners are:
n Boys (8-9) — 1st, Dakota Harvey (19), Cork Elementary; 2nd, Tyler Hartz (13), Austinburg.
n Girls (8-9) — 1st, Megan Pitcher (8), Cork Elementary; 2nd, Jenna Safi (4),Lakeside Int.
n Boys (10-11) — 1st, Nick Brady (18),Lakeside Int.; 2nd, Chase Livingston (13+2), Geneva.
n Girls (10-11) — 1st, Lindsay Mayle (14), Austinburg; B, Carly Aponte (9), Saybrook.
n Boys (12-13) — 1st, Lucas Hitchcock (16), Jefferson; B, Brandon Bryan (12), Geneva.
n Girls (12-13) — 1st, Sarah Morehouse (19), Lakeside Int.; 2nd, Alexa Nowak (15), Rock Creek.
(Number of shots made is in parentheses. First number is out of 25 shots and following numbers are out of 5 shot tie-breaker.)
The six champions will now advance to the district finals Stowe on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, where they will compete with other winners from throughout Northeast Ohio.
The Elks Hoop Shoot, begun as a local program by Corvallis, Oregon Elks in 1946 is in its 38th year of national competition. More than three million boys and girls are expected to participate this year. Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” plaque, on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
