Only two players on team won’t graduate in spring

To the veterans go the spoils on this year’s Star Beacon Ashtabula County Boys Golf Team.

Of the 11 players on the team, nine are seniors. That is a sharp departure from last year, when seven members of the all-county squad were underclassmen.

One of the veterans is Conneaut senior Andrew Bunnell. With his average of 39.7 strokes per nine holes, Bunnell repeats as the Star Beacon Ashtabula County Coach of the Year.

This year’s team is dominated by Geneva, which finished second overall in its first year in the Premier Athletic Conference and won the conference tournament. Its coach, Brad Ellis, has been chosen Coach of the Year for the second straight year.

The Eagles produced the only male golfer from Ashtabula County to reach the district tournament in senior Chris Kelner, who is a part of the team. They also placed one of two underclassmen on the team in junior Michael Schubert, who is also one of five holdovers from the 2008 team.

The Geneva contingent on the team also includes senior Derek Kovach, another repeat member of the team. Rounding out their representation are seniors Randy Jackson and Kyle Kapudjija.

Two members of the Pymatuning Valley squad that earned its second straight Northeastern Athletic Conference championship were chosen. They are seniors Neil Guman and Mac Thurber.

Jefferson has two of the repeat members of the team. They are Eric Holodnak and Jared Jacobs, both seniors.

The team is completed by Lakeside’s Justin Shinault. He is the other junior on the squad.
