It has been another excellent, perhaps even exceptional, year for volleyball in the area. The last act of it will be played out Tuesday at Lakeside High School.
The 21st annual Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Gymnasium. The best-of-five match will feature seniors from every area school — unless Riverside wins its Division I regional championship match this afternoon against Stow-Munroe Falls at Hudson High School — then the Beaver seniors will be busy preparing to play in the state tournament.
Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students. No passes will be accepted.
The visiting team, designated as the Thunder, will be coached by Annah Haeseler, coach of Division II district finalist Geneva, and if Riverside does not qualify for the state tournament, the Beavers’ Stacy Sepelak. The home team, dubbed the Lightning, will be coached by Conneaut’s Paula Ghiz and Lakeside’s Lisa Newsome.
Some schools will provide seniors for each team. That is the case with Conneaut, Geneva and Riverside, if it is not headed to the state tournament.
The Thunder squad will not only include seniors from Geneva, Conneaut and Riverside, but will also have players from Grand Valley, Jefferson, SS. John and Paul, Madison and Perry. The Lightning squad will contain players from Conneaut, Geneva and Riverside, as well as Edgewood, Lakeside, Pymatuning Valley and SJP.
After the game, the Star Beacon sports staff will choose a Player of the Match. That person will receive a special award courtesy of Rob Rich, proprietor of PlayAll Awards and Engraving of Ashtabula.
