ACWSAA all-star match on tap tonight

Girls from all eight Ashtabula County schools will participate today in the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Volleyball Match at SS. John and Paul High School’s Mahoney Gymnasium.

The match, which will feature 38 seniors from the schools, will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students. Proceeds will defray cost of the shirts each player will receive from the ACWSAA and will benefit other ACWSAA projects, including its annual scholarship.

The match will be a best-of-five affair. If one team wins the first three game, a fourth game is guaranteed.

The girls will be divided into teams designated as the Panthers, in reference to the former Ashtabula High School, and Mariners, referencing the former Harbor High School. The Panthers will be dressed in black shirts with gold lettering, while the Mariners will be in gold shirts with purple lettering.

Seven schools each will be represented on the Panther and Mariner squads. The Panthers will be coached by Conneaut’s Paula Ghiz and Geneva’s Annah Haeseler. The Mariners will be directed by Lakeside’s Lisa Newsome and SJP’s Brandi Orlando.

A Player of the Match from each team will be selected.
