Kreider dominates, Jefferson prevails on girls side

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Bad weather? Didn’t matter.

Mallory Kreider wanted to leave her mark on the Edgewood cross country program. There were to be no excuses made if she didn’t accomplish the goal she set out to achieve at the Ashtabula County Meet at Edgewood on Tuesday.

Fighting a cold, heavy wind, some rain and a muddy course, Kreider set a course record with a 19:14 in winning the race.

“The conditions are the same for everyone,” Kreider said. “We run no matter what kind of weather we get. You can’t let it get into your head. You have to be mentally tough.”

Edgewood coach Steve Hill tried to let Kreider know that a course record may be a little out of reach, given the conditions the race was going to be run under. But Kreider wanted no part of what her coach was trying to do.

“(Mallory) definitely had her goals set,” Hill said. “She didn’t want to hear excuses. Her goal was the course record and she got it.

“We explained to be careful with her expectations because of the weather. She was not going to think about it. She wanted it. She wanted to run hard and go after it. That’s what she did.”

Kreider’s course-record time was five seconds better than the previous record of 19:19 set by Lakeside’s Mallory Dragon.

“I’m satisfied with my time,” Kreider said. “This was the last time I’d have the opportunity to run this course. I wanted to make sure I beat the 19:19 time. I would’ve loved to have run a faster time, but the course wasn’t conducive to that.”

Juliana Simmons made it a 1-2 finish for the Warriors. Ashley Keenan, Edgewood’s only other runner, was eighth in 23:02.

“They’ve been running hard for the last two or three years,” Hill said. “They’re just training really well right now. Obviously, Mallory’s going to do her thing. And who better (for Simmons) to learn from? Juliana is absorbing all she can. She was 1:30 faster than last year in these same conditions.

“Her expectations are high and she ran awfully darn good.”

Simmons was second in 21:07.

“I stayed relaxed and hydrated throughout the day,” Simmons said. “I tried to work during the third mile to keep a good pace going.

“Race-wise, I try to keep the front in sight and pick it up. I’m not worrying about what’s behind me, but about what’s in front of me. I focus ahead and keep pushing.”

Behind the two Warriors were a pair of Falcons. Jefferson’s Hannah Francis and Sam Morford finished third and fourth in 21:39 and 22:39, respectively.

“I knew Mallory would be first,” Francis said. “I was trying to run with Juliana, but that didn’t work out too well. In the second mile, I started to fall back. She’s more consistent than I am.

“In the third mile, along the strip (on Blake Road), I thought I could start to pick it up, but then I thought, ‘Oh, no, I can’t. I’m going to puke.’ ”

“I try to stay with (Francis),” Morford said. “That’s my main goal.

“The rain was nice. You have to let (the weather) work for you. You can’t change the weather.”

Conneaut’s Jennifer Oxley was fifth in 22:51.

“I try to stay with people I know are in the same area I am,” Oxley said. “Sam (Morford) is usually right in front of me. My time dropped a lot, but I’m happy with my placing.

“I don’t have a problem with the cold. It’s the wind (that bothers me). I try to run and not think about it.

“I try to forget everything and keep pushing.”

Behind top-10 finishes from Francis, Morford and Brook Orvos (9th, 23:15), the Falcons claimed the team title.

“The girls have been working hard, they run well in packs,” Jefferson assistant coach T.J. Furman, filling in for coach Gary Thaxton, who was sick, said. “They do a nice job of feeding off of each other. We’ve run a tough schedule, too. They’ll have run four or five races in 14 days.”

The Falcons scored 31 points to beat Conneaut (41 points) and Lakeside (56 points).

“I told them to go out, have fun and fight through (the weather),” Furman said. “It wasn’t about time today. It was running for a place. It’s about fighting through and we’ve got some tough girls.”

Jefferson’s other two scorers were Summer Pacholke and Dayna Stevens, who finished 21st and 22nd in 25:17 and 25:21, respectively.

Joining Oxley in the top 10 for the Spartans was Leanne Banyas, who was seventh in 22:57. Maria Perkio placed 13th in 23:50, Jessica Hively was 15th in 23:59 and Charaea Sayles was 34th in 32:07.

“I’m happy with them,” Conneaut coach Jim Rehmer said. “They all ran well. We’ve got to get our fifth runner closer. That’s the big thing for us right now. They all ran good.”

For the Dragons, Marissa Johnson was 12th in 23:48, Ashcelyn Hosler was 17th in 24:21, Katie Eurich was 20th in 24:42, Jennifer Schwentker was 28th in 27:13 and Haley Wrightnour was 31st in 28:17.

Mackenzi Wheeler, Alexis Millard and Jessica Lynen placed 1-2-3 to give Rowe the team victory with 20 points. Jefferson was second with 37 points.

Wheeler won in 12:59, Millard was second in 13:24 and Lynen was third in 14:00.

Jessica Becker was fourth for the Falcons in 14:12.
