Fishing derby more a-lure-ing

Third installment at Geneva Marina attracts field of 43 competitors

Excitement continued to grow this past week in the Geneva Marina Fishing Derby, now in its third week. Last Saturday’s contest totaled 43 entries, not bad considering that only two weeks ago you could count the number of entries on one hand with a few fingers to spare.

Congratulations to Dave and Zack Fowler for reeling in the largest walleye of the day and netting the $86 prize. Fishing aboard the Hog Master, captained by Dave Fowler, they pulled in a walleye topping 9.955 pounds while fishing approximately 14 miles out of the Geneva Marina on a Dipsy Diver with a spoon. Fishing with Dave and Zack that day were Bill Markham, Ed Waterfall, and Joe Lowther. The group decided to split the winnings among all the fishermen in the boat.

Proving that in some instances size doesn’t matter, the winning steelhead this week, caught by Mike Cantwell of Alliance, Ohio, weighed in at only 4.8 pounds. It was also, however, the only one checked in at the marina, so it was enough to win Mike this week’s take in the steelhead division.

Mike was fishing on Hell Yeah Charters, captained by Weebe (yes, that is the name reported). They were 11 miles out of the marina when they caught their fish on a Dipsy Diver and purple Contender spoon. There were no steelhead brought in last week, so Mike won this week’s take and the prize money rolled over from last week, for a total of $156. Not bad for a day of fishing. The group decided to split the prize money.

According to representatives from the Doc Shop, the Geneva Marina Fishing Derby has generated quite a bit of excitement among local anglers, and as the number of entries continues to increase, fishermen can expect the prize money to continue to grow along with it.

There are still a few weeks left in this summer’s fishing derby, so if you are interested you must enter the derby by 6 a.m. on Saturday at the Geneva Marina, Geneva Marina fish cleaning station, or Debo’s Bait and Tackle, located just north of the Geneva State Park entrance on Route 534. The entry fee of $5 per person qualifies you not only for that daily contest, but also enters you into the overall big fish of the season contest. Anglers must check their fish in at the Geneva Marina fish cleaning facility by 4 p.m. on Saturdays. All fish must be caught by licensed fishermen using legal tackle.

The anglers who catch the biggest walleye and biggest steelhead of the day will split the day’s entry fees. The biggest steelhead wins forty percent of the daily take and the biggest walleye earns another forty percent. The remaining 10 percent will be carried-over each week and awarded to the angler who catches the biggest walleye of the season. Fish are measured by weight, not by length, and must be caught on the Saturday on which the angler is registered. Tiebreakers will be determined by length of the fish.
