A Don McCormack column: ACCESS to answers about college

Paying another visit to the variety store...

College life

The myriad rules and regulations when it comes to what a high school graduate must follow and conform to in regards to going on to play a sport at the collegiate level are complex, to say the least.

One misstep, whether it be in fulfilling academic requirements, filling out paper work or simply making the grade in terms of grade-point average can be devastating.

Enter, ACCESS Ashtabula County.

The organization is stepping to the fore and will stage a Collegiate Athlete Eligibility Seminar a week from tonight, Wednesday, March 24, in the Large-Group Instruction Room at Lakeside High School.

There will be a panel of experts from the Division I, Division II and Division III levels on hand to provide information, along with some current college student-athletes, who will be on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

The event will tip off at 6 p.m. and, get this, sports fans, there is no cost.

While the seminar is free and open to the public, making a reservation is recommended.

For more information regarding this even, contact Paula Ghiz or Kim Landis at 576-3125.

Considering what’s at stake for student-athletes who aspire to continue their athletic careers at the next level — not to mention what’s at stake for their parents — this concept is a terrific idea and the fact it is free and open to all comers makes it admirable.

Hoopin’ it up

The Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association will holds its annual basketball game for seniors in the county tonight at Geneva High School.

Action will tip off at 6:30 p.m. at the home of the Eagles.

For more information regarding the contest, contact founder and president Frank Roskovics at 964-7825.

No average Joe

Just a reminder, Atlanta Falcon Joe Zelenka will be speaking at a special event put on by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on Saturday morning.

Zelenka, who is married to Ashtabula native Rebekah Demshar, will speak from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Large-Group Instruction Room at Lakeside High School.

Best of all, there is no cost to hear the inspirational message of Zelenka, a former star player at Benedictine High School and Wake Forest University.

For more information about the event, contact Rick Peck at 228-9145.

Geneva boys basketball coach Scott Torok is no Bill Murray. However, he may feel like a character in the actor’s movie “Groundhog Day.”
