The Lakeside softball team might not have won the Premier Athletic Conference crown, but it certainly had a say in who did with a 6-5 victory over South on Monday at Lakeside.
“We talked about that before the game,” Lakeside coach Kerri Weir said. “We didn’t want to be a red carpet to the PAC championship. Though it wasn’t us (winning it), we wanted to make our mark.”
With the win, the Dragons (8-10, 4-6) forced the Rebels to share the conference title with North.
Lakeside overcame a 5-2 deficit with four runs in the home half of the sixth.
“There were some errors here and there,” Weir said. “There wasn’t anything drastic. We put the ball in play. We put it in their hands. We hit the ball hard on the ground and made them make mistakes. We played ball like we were capable of doing — like we knew we were capable of doing.”
Kara Norman picked up the win and Christina Hutchison got the save.
“Kara did a great job,” Weir said. “That was definitely a look into our future with her. The future looks bright.
“I really wasn’t planning on playing Hutch. When we took the one-run lead, I thought we really didn’t have anything to lose by throwing her for one inning and trying to win the game.”
Krista Johnston doubled among two hits for the Dragons, Erica Villa scored twice and Hutchison doubled.
n Grand Valley 7, Cornerstone 0 — Chelsea Hanck whiffed nine and walked one in a one-hit shutout. Tayler Schimley tripled among two hits and scored three times, Pallavi Iyer had two hits and drove in two, Angie Ferguson drove in a pair and Randi Woodworth scored two runs for the Mustangs (3-22, 0-10 in Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division).
n Jefferson 12, Geneva 0 — Freshman Rachel Francis doubled among two hits and drove in three runs, Sandy Hubbard and Megan Gochneaur had two hits and scored three times and Jenna March had a pair of hits and scored a pair of runs for the Falcons (9-13, 6-5 in Northeastern Conference). Hannah Francis and Kristie Organiscak each drove in two runs. Brittany Stevenson had a pair of hits for the Eagles (7-17, 3-9).
Baseball
n GV 20, Newbury 5 — David DeGennaro smacked five hits, including a triple, scored four times and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Mustangs (11-11, 6-4 in CVC Valley). Kevin George had four hits, including a double, scored four runs and drove in three, Matt Sielski had two hits and scored two runs and Mitchell Lake and Jake Susman each had two hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Trenton Doing had three hits, drove in three and scored twice.
n South 8, Riverside — Tyler Falvey had two hits as the Beavers (8-19) fell in a Division I sectional championship.
Tennis
n Geneva 4, Jefferson 1 — Kyle O’Dell claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles and the first-doubles team of Tom Kelly and Tyler Foglio won, 6-2, 6-2. Duncan Treen won at second singles for the Falcons.
