GV boys fourth, girls fifth at CVC Meet

The Grand Valley boys were fourth, while the Mustang girls finished fifth in the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division Track Meet, which concluded Thursday at GV.

The GV boys finished with 65 points. That put them behind Kirtland with 187, Berkshire with 163 and Newbury with 83.

The GV girls racked up 62 points. Berkshire easily won the title with 214 points to 128 for Kirtland, 106 for Cardinal and 71 for Newbury.

The best finish in Thursday’s action for the GV boys were thirds from Mitch Preske in the high jump at 6-2, Sean Smith in the 400-meter dash in 54.0, the 800-meter relay of Chris Hart, Smith, Preske and A.J. Henson in 1:39.6 and the 1600-meter relay of Hart, Henson, Cory Weyer and Smith in 3:49.1. That went with Aaron Brown’s third in Tuesday’s discus.

GV’s best girls finish Thursday was a second from the 400-meter relay of Lyndsay Dedek, Bailey Holmes, Allison Unger and Dakota Kunka in 57.2. That went with a second in Tuesday’s shot put by Breana Fortney.

The Mustang girls also received thirds from Siera Holley in the 1600-meter run in 5:45.1 and the 800-meter run in 2:28.9 and Fortney in the discus at 78-7.

The GV boys got fourths from Brandi Chandler in the long jump and the 3200-meter relay of Nick Benton, Weyer, Austin Drenski and Josh Stagl from Tuesday’s action.

The Mustang girls received fourths from Kunka in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.3, their 800-meter relay of Dedek, Holmes, Cheyenne Dohrn and Unger in 2:02.4 and Unger, Holley, Bailey and Kunka in 4:28.3 in the 1600-meter relay and their 3200-meter relay of Holley, Lauren Prax, Kristen McClintock and Katherine Carlson on Tuesday.

Fifths for the GV boys were produced by Hart in the 110-meter high hurdles in 18.5 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 45.4 and the 400-meter relay of Hart, Chandler, Preske and Henson in 48.2.

The GV girls received a sixth from Holmes in the 200-meter dash in 31.0.

A sixth for the GV boys went to Chandler in the 100-meter dash at 12.4.

Sevenths for the Mustang boys went to Drenski in the 3200-meter run in 11:31.8 and the 1600-meter run in 5:07.1, Henson in the 200-meter dash in 25.6, Weyer in the 300-meter hurdles in 46.9 and James Anderson in the shot put at 35-41⁄4 and Tuesday’s discus.

The GV girls received sevenths from Unger in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.3, Lauren Prax in the 3200-meter run in 14:37.6 and Melissa Prax in Tuesday’s high jump.

Eighths for the Mustang girls went to Dohrn in the 200-meter dash in 31.6 and the 100-meter dash in 15.1.

The GV boys got an eighth from Smith in Tuesday’s long jump.

The Mathews Mustangs have done both to a great degree this season in rolling to the top of the Northeastern Athletic Conference race, while the Grand Valley Mustangs have had too many moments where they didn’t achieve those traits.

    In 1958, a mere 54 years ago, the Grand Valley High School and Ashtabula County boys basketball career scoring record belonged to Jim Dodd. The ACBF hall of famer scored 1,377 points in his career as a leading post player for the Mustangs.
