n LIZZY ZIEMSKI, JEFFERSON — Carrying a 3.7 grade-point average, Ziemski ranks 24th of 181 juniors at Jefferson.
In her third year in the basketball program, the daughter of Daniel and Kathy Ziemski earned third-team Division II All-Ohio recognition, first-team All-Northeast Lakes District selection and was chosen the Star Beacon Ashtabula County Player of the Year, the co-Player of the Year by the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation and a first-team Coaches’ All-NEC selection. As a sophomore, she was second-team All-Northeast Lakes District, honorable-mention All-Ohio and a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-NEC selection.
Working on her third varsity track letter, she finished ninth in the Division II state high jump as a sophomore. She has twice won the district and NEC high jump championships and has also qualified for regional in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.
She earned her second varsity volleyball letter this year. She was a second-team all-conference selection and all-county choice.
A two-time academic letterwinner, Ziemski has been on the merit roll throughout high school.
A member of the concert and marching bands, she is also an ACCESS student ambassador, a blood drive worker and a volunteer instructor at basketball and volleyball camp.
n TAYLER PUGLIESE, LAKESIDE — With a 3.95 grade-point average, Pugliese ranks 12th of 53 seniors at Lakeside.
In earning her third varsity basketball letter, the daughter of Frank and Terri Pugliese received first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-Premier Athletic Conference honors, as well as Division I All-Northeast Lakes District selection. She participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game. As a junior, she earned honorable-mention all-county status.
While earning her third varsity volleyball letter, she was chosen Star Beacon Ashtabula County Player of the Year while serving as a team captain for the Dragons and helping them reach the Division I district tournament and earn a share of the Premier Athletic Conference championship for the second straight year. She was Player of the Match for the Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic and also played in the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game.
A National Honor Society member, Pugliese has also earned four academic letters and has earned a Senior Leadership Award for 100 hours of service.
A Student Council member, she has volunteered as Thomas Jefferson Elementary as a basketball coach and has also volunteered at McKinsey Elementary and at Ashtabula YMCA.
n ROSE LANE, PYMATUNING VALLEY — Carrying a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, Lane is first of 104 seniors at PV.
The daughter of Brad and Sheri Lane earned her fourth varsity basketball letter for the Lakers this year, serving as a team captain in help the team to a school record with 22 victories, a spot in the top 10 teams in the state in Division III, a second straight Northeastern Athletic Conference championship and a berth in the Division III district tournament. She was a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County selection for a second straight year and was second-team All-NAC after first-team honors as a junior, as well as earning honorable-mention All-Northeast Lakes District recognition. She was the leading scorer in Ashtabula County this year.
She was PV’s nominee for Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Player of the Year. She participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and won the three-point shooting contest and also played in the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game. She was an Academic All-Ohio selection and was chosen Scholar-Athlete of the Week by WEWS Channel 5.
Three varsity letters were earned in softball. She helped the Lakers to the Division III regional tournament as a junior.
In four years of volleyball participation, she earned two varsity letters, helping PV reach the Division III district tournament this year and earn a school record for victories. She participated in the Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game.
Serving as president of National Honor Society in her third year with the organization, Lane has also been a member of 4.0 Club and participated in the Principal’s Breakfast for four years. She recorded a 30 on the ACT exam.
A four-year Student Council representative, she is serving as vice president this year. She participated in Students Against Destructive Decisions and helped organize the Buddy Walk to raise funds for Down’s Syndrome research and was also a Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer. She works at Yorkie’s Ice Cream in Espyville, Pa.
n JAKE PHELPS, SS. JOHN AND PAUL — Carrying a 3.775 grade-point average, Phelps ranks third of 18 seniors at SS. John and Paul.
In his third varsity basketball season, the son of John and Toni Phelps was a second-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County selection for the second straight year and was a team captain for the Heralds. He was also a third-team Division IV All-Northeast Lakes District selection and participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation All-Star Game. He was a special-mention Coaches’ All-ESC choice as a junior after honorable-mention all-league honors as a sophomore.
In his third varsity football season, he earned first-team Division VI All-Ohio honors and was chosen All-Northeast Lakes District Offensive Player of the Year. He was also a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County selection at quarterback after being chosen a first-team defensive back as a junior. He was also a first-team Coaches’ All-East Suburban Conference defensive back as a junior after second-team all-county and all-conference honors at quarterback as a sophomore. He was chosen the winner of the Ashtabula County Touchdown Club’s Robert L. Wiese Memorial Scholarship.
He is working on his third varsity baseball letter. He was a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-ESC shortstop as a junior and a first-team all-county and all-conference pitcher as a sophomore.
A National Honor Society member, Phelps is also a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Roll. He has also been a member of Youth Leadership Ashtabula County.
A Hugh O’Brien Youth alternate for two years, he has been a Lake County Tech Prep representative, a HALO representative, a Key Club member and volunteer for the Festival of Trees. He is serving as class treasurer this year. He also has helped with the SJP midget football and flag football camps, the Mount Carmel School Festival and Mount Carmel Bazaar Cleanup, the Blessing of the Fleet, Toys for Tots and has served as a junior high dance disc jockey.
n YERAM KANG, EDGEWOOD — Ranked first of 189 sophomores at Edgewood, Kang holds a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
The daughter of Duck Young and Soon Doek Kang earned her first varsity swimming letter. She earned the Coach J Award.
She has lettered twice in golf, earning Edgewood’s MVP award for both seasons. She was a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County selection as a sophomore, has earned first-team Coaches’ All-Northeastern Conference honors for two years and finished in the top 20 of the Northeast Ohio Girls Golf Coaches Association Tournament this year.
Kang has earned a first-year Scholarship Award, a Straight A Award and academic awards from the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association and the NEC.
A two-year member of chorus, she has been in the Soundsations for one year. She is also a member of the Erie Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Service Club and Spanish Club.
n JON YORK, PYMATUNING VALLEY — Carrying a 3.71 grade-point average, York ranks among the top seniors in a class of 104 at PV.
In his third varsity basketball season, the son of Laura and Russell York served as a team captain and earned second-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and honorable-mention Coaches’ All-Northeastern Athletic Conference honors. He participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation All-Star Game. He helped the Lakers reach the Division III regional championship game as a junior.
He is working on his fourth varsity baseball letter. He was a second-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-NEC player as a junior and earned all-county and all-conference honors as a freshman. He was PV’s MVP last year.
Four varsity letters were earned in golf as he led the Lakers to two straight NAC championships. He was a first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County selection as a senior and junior.
A National Honor Society member, York has been a member of 4.0 Club and on the honor roll throughout high school. He has participated in the Principal’s Breakfast. He was Academic Basketball Player of the Year in his sophomore year.
A Student Council representative, he has participated in Ruriteens Blast and Students Against Destructive Decisions.
n STEPHEN ROBISON, SS. JOHN AND PAUL — Ranking fourth of 18 seniors at SS. John and Paul, Robison holds a 3.766 grade-point average.
In his fourth season in the Heralds basketball program, the son of Carla and Van Robison earned his second varsity letter. He participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation All-Star Game. He was an honorable-mention Coaches’ All-ESC selection as a junior.
In earning his fourth varsity football letter, he earned special-mention Division VI All-Ohio honors for the second straight year, along with first-team All-Northeast Lakes District, Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-East Suburban Conference honors while serving as a team captain for the past two seasons. He shared the William H. Phillips Memorial Scholarship this year. He also shared team MVP honors as a junior. He was a second-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and Coaches’ All-ESC as a sophomore and was the team defensive MVP.
He is working on his third varsity baseball letter in his fourth year in the program. He earned second-team Coaches’ All-ESC recognition as a junior.
A National Honor Society member, Robison is also a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Roll. He was also the school’s Buckeye Boys State delegate last year. He has earned honors from SJP in English and physical education and the Kiwanis Scholarship in art. He has also received the Eagle of the Cross Award from the Youngstown Diocese for modeling Christian discipleship.
Student Council president this year, he was the freshman class president. He was in the mentorship program with the Ashtabula County engineer’s office. He has been a choir member for three years and a Drama Club member for one and has helped set up the new computer lab at the school. A member of St. Joseph’s Church, he has been an altar server, Eucharistic minister, catcher for the healing service at his church and a worker at the Mount Carmel Bazaar and the Festival of Trees. He has helped as an instructor for the Ashtabula Midget Football League camp and the SJP Flag Football League. He has also worked at Covered Bridge Pizza for three years.
n ASHLEY KEENAN, EDGEWOOD — With a 3.618 grade-point average, Keenan ranks 33rd of 162 juniors at Edgewood.
In her third varsity wrestling season, the daughter of John and Krisia Keenan earned her third letter for the Warriors, earning first-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and honorable-mention Coaches’ All-NEC selection after second-team all-conference and honorable-mention all-county selection as a sophomore. She became Ashtabula County’s first girl to qualify for district wrestling this year after being an alternate as a sophomore.
Currently, she is working on her third varsity track letter. She qualified is a pole vault and in the 3200-meter relay for the Warriors in her freshman and sophomore seasons.
In the fall, she earned her second varsity letters in cross country and soccer.
A member of the school’s 4.0 Club, Keenan has also earned an NEC academic award and a first-year Scholarship Award.
For three years, she has been a member of the concert and marching bands. She has also been in the Art Club and jazz band for one year.
n KASI MERCILLIOTT, EDGEWOOD — Holding a 3.607 grade-point average, Mercilliott ranks 43rd of 178 seniors at Edgewood.
In her fourth basketball season, the daughter of James and Lori Mercilliott earned her second varsity letter for the Warriors. She earned second-team Star Beacon Ashtabula County and special-mention Coaches’ All-Northeastern Conference selection. She was Edgewood’s MVP and the school’s candidate for Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Player of the Year. She participated in the Star Beacon-Ed Batanian Senior Classic and Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game.
In her fourth softball season, she is working on her third varsity letter. She was second-team all-conference as a junior and won a Gold Glove Award.
Four years in volleyball produced two letters. She was a second-team Star Beacon All-Ashtabula County selection and honorable-mention Coaches’ All-NEC choice this year. She was Edgewood’s MVP and a member of the Lakeside Tournament all-tournament team. She participated in the Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic and the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association All-Star Game.
A National Honor Society member, Mercilliott was Edgewood’s math Student of the Month in 2006 and 2008. She has earned a first-year Scholarship Award and an NEC All-Academic Award.
A member of Pep Club and chorus for four years, she has also spent two years in band, office experience, Spanish Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She also spent one year each in field experience and Service Club.
