It was a dominating day for Perry at Saturday’s Chagrin Valley Conference cross country meet at Perry Outdoor YMCA as the Pirates won easily in both the boys and girls division of the CVC Chagrin Division competition.
The Perry boys outdistanced runner-up Kenston, 20-59, as they claimed the first three places and had all five scorers in the top nine finishers. The Pirate girls, meanwhile, defeated second-place Chagrin Falls, 22-59, as they had the top two finishers and all five of their scorers in the top nine.
Coach Bill Sarvis had to be particularly pleased with the boys results as senior Dan Jackisch, a Division II state meet placer last year who has battled injury and illness ever since, won in 16:23. That brought him in ahead of teammate Dean Light, who finished in 16:43, and Tom Jordan, who was third in 17:02. Adam Rosenbaum was fifth for Perry in 17:16 and Zach Hurlimann was ninth in 17:31.
For the Pirate girls, sophomore Abbie Clifford, another state veteran was in total command, finishing in 18:41. Rachel Greuber was second for Perry in 19:55, while Marissa Baranauskas was fifth in 20:27, Meredith Schuette was sixth in 20:33 and Carrie Jones rounded out the scoring in ninth in 20:59.
“I was really pleased with the boys and the girls,” Sarvis said. “I’m especially excited about Dan after a big race from Dean last week and on a day as hot as it was today. I think that helps out our team a lot.”
Berkshire won the Valley Division girls championship, led by individual champion Alex Bowers, who won in 19:39. The Badgers had 32 points to 60 for Kirtland.
Grand Valley could not field a full team, but had four girls in the Valley Division race. Siera Holley led the Mustangs in 16th place in 22:36. Katherine Carlson was 27th in 23:55, Melissa Prax was 36th in 25:05 and Lauren Prax was 38th in 25:13.
Independence was the boys Valley Division champion, beating Berkshire, 37-41. Ryan Polman of Independence was the individual champion in 16:39.
Grand Valley only had two boys in the Valley Division race. Austin Drenski was 24th in 19:07, while Adam Byler was 51st in 22:26.
JV boys soccer
Hugo Reyes provided the winning goal for Geneva in the championship match as the Eagles defeated the host school in the Grand River Academy JV tournament. Patrick Hoerrle scored the other goal for Geneva (14-1-1), while goalkeeper Alex Lillie had seven saves.
Lawrence School from Cleveland finished third in the tournament, while Edgewood was fourth, Harvey fifth and Conneaut sixth.
Geneva started its route to the title with a 2-1 victory taken in a shootout. Jacob Miller, Ronnie Nara and Cody Hobel each scored on penalty kicks to back up Hoerrle’s goal in regulation. Lillie had seven saves.
In its second match, Lillie helped the Eagles blank Lawrence, 2-0, with four saves. Erik Braun and Nara scored Geneva’s goals.
Sectional tennis
Geneva’s district-tournament entries were all eliminated in the first round of Thursday’s competition, but three of the five girls that beat them qualified for the Division I state tournament Saturday at Oberline College. Firestone’s Christine Coffman, who beat the Eagles’ Courtney Thompson, ended up as the fourth of six qualifiers behind South’s Kyle McPhillips, the champion and the country’s No. 1 14-and-under singles player.
In doubles action, Brecksville’s Ashley Bonamer and Erika Sullivan, who defeated Geneva’s Allie Mack and Sarah Smith, ended up as district runners-up behind Walsh Jesuit’s Courtney Fleissner and Nancy Joyce. Meanwhile, North Canton Hoover’s Kim Reisdorf and Lauren Rife, who defeated Eagles Nichole Boruta and Jessica Coggins, lost in the second round Thursday and failed to earn one of six doubles spots to the state tournament.

PV prevails
Cody Miller and Zach Campbell knew what they had to do in order for the Pymatuning Valley wrestling team to complete a come-from-behind victory over Jefferson on Wednesday at triangular match at PV.
The pair delivered exactly that and the Lakers pulled off the win, 37-36. -
Eagles bounce back
The Geneva girls didn’t have much time to regroup. But just one day after a heartbreaking defeat, they were able to knock off a strong Perry team on the road, 39-33.
