Roundup: ‘Gut’ gets her kicks for Eagles


Geneva’s Suelen Gutierrez found a way to contribute on all four goals in a 4-1 win over Lakeside in the season-opener for both teams.

Gutierrez has three assists and scored a goal and Krista Blake scored a pair of goals and added an assist. Freshman Emma Kingzett opened the scoring for the Eagles (1-0) with the first goal of her varsity career.

Matty Stowell scored on an assist from Christine Misinec for the Dragons (0-1).

n West Geauga 2, Riverside 0 — Michelle Anselmo and Kori Chapic each tallied a goal for the Wolverines (1-0). Deanna Gundling had 12 saves for the Beavers (0-1).



Boys golf

n Edgewood 213, SS. John and Paul 215 — The Warriors’ fourth man, Cody Herman, fired a 56 to edge SJP’s fourth man, Brian Strawbridge (58), to give Edgewood (1-0) the win.

Edgewood’s Shane Taylor and SJP’s Leo Orlando each finished the par-35 front nine at Maple Ridge with a 48 to lead their respective teams.

n Pymatuning Valley 172, Conneaut 194, Lordstown 198 — Jon York and Roman Guman each fired a 42 and Adam Lane finished with a 43 to lead the Lakers (2-1, 1-0 in Northeastern Athletic Conference) at the par-35 Andover Golf Course.

Andrew Bunnell netted a 42 for the Spartans (1-1, 0-0 in Northeastern Conference).

n Fairport 161, Grand Valley 239 — Aaron Humensky tallied a 52 to lead the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1 in Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division). All four Skippers that counted were at or under 42 on the par-36 back nine at Painesville Country Club.

n Geneva 344, Lakeside 363 — All six Geneva players shot 87 or less at the par-72 Chapel Hills Golf Course. Pete Newmeyer and Brad Nicholson each tallied an 85 to lead the Eagles. Jimmy Frey tallied an 88 to top the Dragons (1-1, 1-0 in Premier Athletic Conference).



Girls golf

n Jefferson 183, North 255 — Shelly Ford blistered the field with a one-over 35 on the par-34 front nine at Lost Nation for the Falcons (3-2). Kaitlin Pestello (48), Christen Lucas (50) and Brianne Bodisch (50) all finished better then the first North golfer.

n Conneaut 243, SJP 263 — Kelsey Weske shot a 57 on the par-36 front nine at Harbor Golf Club to pace the Spartans (2-3) and Alexa Griswold tallied a 60. Nicole Gallo led the Heralds (0-4) with a 59.

n Perry 226, Edgewood 238 — Nicolena Ackley (53), Emily Blaha (55) and Ashley Rideout (58) all finished the par-35 front nine at Powderhorn under 60 for the Pirates (3-0). Yeram Kang carried the Warriors with a 54 and Maggie Nanney added a 57.

n Geneva 207, PV 230 — Nicole Lara (49), Lindsey Adams (48) and Carlin Kern (51) paved the way for the Eagles (2-0) at the par-35 Andover Golf Course. Danna Hayford (52) and Ariel Stech led PV (2-5).



Tennis

n Geneva 5, Edgewood 0 — Courtney Thompson (first singles) and Allie Mack and Sarah Smith (second doubles) each won in straight sets to pace the Eagles (2-0, 1-0) in the NEC opener for both teams. Jessica Coggins, Brittany Kelly and Nichole Boruta and Betsy Edwards also won for Geneva.

n Jefferson 5, Harvey 0 — Chelsea Jarrell, Kelly Tisch and Courtney Painter all won at singles for the Falcons in their opener (1-0, 1-0 in NEC). The doubles teams of Emily Jeppeson and Shawni Deyermand and Jenny Pischalko and Kirsten Signor also won for Jefferson.

n Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 4, Perry 1 — The second doubles team of Abbey Hilborn and Alex Nichols gained the only win for Perry (1-1).

— Bob Ettinger
