Classic spikers at the fore

Rosters set for annual all-star match

With the district volleyball tournaments being played, it’s once again time for the Star Beacon-Frank Roskovics Senior Classic.

The 24th edition of the best-of-match involving seniors from the 11 schools in the Star Beacon coverage area will take place at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Lakeside Gymnasium.

The first squad will include Lydia Coccitto and Angie Zappitelli of Conneaut, Judith Silvieus and Jaime Rogers of Edgewood, Hallie Vollmar and Ashley Hixon of Madison, Megan Reid and Courtney Brassow of Perry, Ally Workman, Heather Brant and Michealia Skleres of Pymatuning Valley, Rachel Bares and Maria Zito of Riverside and Brenna Powers and Brenna Kubec of St. John.

The second team will include Edgewood’s Katie Thomas and Abby Pisano, Geneva’s Natalie Thomas, Grand Valley’s Sarah Bixel and Kelly Preske, Jefferson’s LeeAnn Farr and Giulia Giancola, Lakeside’s Paige Halsey and Emily Gehring, Madison’s Allie Klimko and Haley Dake, Perry’s Alexa Roberts and Tori Toth and Riverside’s Maggie Julius and Alexis Parsons.

Ohio High School Athletic Association rules prohibit more than three players from any one team being on the same side for an all-star competition, so players from a respective school will be facing off against teammates from their high school team in the Classic.

The Classic carries the name of Roskovics, the longtime coach of the Harbor Mariners and founder of the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association.

The match was tipped off back in the fall of 1989, the year coach Dave Fowler’s St. John Heralds reached the Class A state championship match, only to fall to Newark Catholic.

The 2012 rendition of the Classic will mark the 24th consecutive year the Star Beacon has held the match. Its original home was Ball Gymnasium, a historic facililty that recently had a date with the wrecking ball, and the good people at Lakeside High School have been gracious enough to allow their beautiful Lakeside Gymnasium to be the home of the Classic ever since.

Several years ago, the name of Frank Roskovics was attached to the Classic.

Roskovics, the longtime volleyball and girls basketball coach at Harbor High School and a member of the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation Hall of Fame, is the founder of the Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association.

  • Alex Give him an Oscar!

For the first three years of his football career with the Grand Valley Mustangs, offensive lineman Alex Oscar said he viewed playing football as more of a job than a fun sport to play.
Then, during his senior year, the Mustangs finished 7-3 and won a Northeastern Athletic Conference title under first-year coach John Glavickas and Oscar suddenly started viewing the game as fun again.

Then again, odds are, he wasn’t around to blow out the candles at such an age, but no one is sure.
For while we know James Joseph Burns was born on June 2, 1876 in Ashtabula, there is no record of his death.
