The beat goes on in Ashtabula County boys tennis.
As has seemingly been the case forever, the Geneva tennis team dominates the Star Beacon All-Ashtabula County squad, with the top two honors either shared or held outright by Eagles and five other players as members of the team.
Leading the way for the Eagles are senior Jake McMahan, who received a share of his second straight recognition as Star Beacon Ashtabula County Player of the Year. Geneva coach Phil Dubsky, who led his team to a second straight undisputed Premier Athletic Conference championship, was again chosen Coach of the Year.
This year, however, McMahan doesn’t share Player of the Year recognition with a teammate. Instead, that distinction goes to Lakeside senior Justin Shinault.
Both players reached the Division I district tournament again, McMahan for a third straight year and Shinault for a second. McMahan qualified for district in doubles after reaching the state tournament in 2010. Shinault was part of the singles draw again.
Other Eagles joining McMahan on the all-county squad are Jacob Groce, who made up the other half of his doubles pair at district this year, and doubles partners Stuart Jackson and Brandon Privitera and Alex Lillie and Ryan Huang.
Shinault is also joined on the team by one of his Dragon comrades. Chase Brown was also chosen in singles.
Completing the all-county squad is Jefferson’s Zach Mucci. He was the only other player to qualify for district play, making that level in the Division II tournament.
The all-county squad is a veteran outfit this year. The only underclassmen on the team are Huang, a junior, and sophomores Groce and Mucci.
Repeat selections to the all-county squad are Groce, Jackson, Lillie, McMahan, Privitera and Shinault.

A Vince Peluso column: GV a long way from satisfied
At this point in the baseball season, there are two types of teams remaining — those that are happy to still be playing, and those that expect to still be playing.
