Several young men wrestling for the Jefferson Youth Club did well in the sectional tournament on Jan. 27 at Madison High School, then followed that up at the district tournament Sunday at Austintown Fitch High School, two Falcons bringing home the gold.
Co-captain Jason Mayes (60 pounds) and Mike Hamski (70 pounds) were both crowned district champions, going undefeated Sunday.
Mayes and Hamski will each be competing in the state tournament next Sunday in Akron.
Colt Edgar (76 pounds) won his first two matches Sunday, losing in the semifinals and again in the consolation semifinals. Connor Toth (110 pounds) won his first match, losing in the second round and consolation round. Co-captain Bill Beckwith (150 pounds) lost his first match of the day and attempted a comeback with back to back wins in the consolation round. He was knocked from contention in the consolation semifinals.
Six young men placed at the sectional tournament. Mayes, Hamski and Edgar were all sectional shampions. Toth, competing in his first wrestling season, placed second, along with Beckwith, while Joe Jafarace (48 pounds) placed third.
