It’s a good thing Madison wrestler Nick Montgomery likes the spotlight. He saw plenty of it this weekend at the Top Gun Tournament in Alliance.
Montgomery won the 132-pound championship in what is considered to be Northeast Ohio’s toughest events.
“He wrestled real well,” Madison coach Ryan Wirtzberger said. “He’s gifted. He has really good hips and doesn’t get flustered.”
That made itself evident when Montgomery fell behind in an earlier match.
“He got down, 6-1, in his semifinal,” Wirtzberger said. “He worked his butt off to come back and win against a kid who was a three-time state placer.
“He’s a gamer. He likes when everyone is watching him wrestle. With Nick, if you’re not careful, he can score a five-point move on you pretty easily.”
In what might be the prelude to a deep postseason run, Josh Ransom took second at 220 pounds.
“He won (the championship at Brecksville),” Wirtzberger said. “I think he wrestled extremely well.
“He has a legitimate shot to win a state title. He wrestled really well. He has to get down there, but when he does, he can beat anyone staring him in the face.”
Some misfortune befell Ransom in the championship match.
“In the final, he was taken down at the buzzer,” Wirtzberger said. “That was kind of controversial — time was out and the referee missed it.”
Riverside’s Evan Rosborough also took home a runner-up trophy. He was put to his back for two points in the championship match and wound up losing, 6-2.
“He wrestled well,” Riverside coach Scott Blank said. “He just had some bad luck.”
Soren Iverson took fourth for the seventh-place Blue Streaks at 152, Jared Lasko (120) and Bo Ransom (138) were each sixth and Tim Streisel (182) was eighth.
“Obviously, you want to do the best you can,” Wirtzberger said. “You want to win, but we were down there with St. Paris Graham and they have won multiple state and national championships. Massillon Perry was there and they’re always one of the top teams in the state.
“I’m really pleased. Madison has never had this many placers. I’d have liked to have had more with odd numbers by their names, but once you get in that top six, the matches can go either way. If we wrestled the matches 10 times, there would be 10 different outcomes.”
Nick Boggs was sixth for the Beavers, who finished 20 of 41 teams.
“He got beat by a point or two in the finals,” Blank said. “He had a takedown at the edge of the mat in the finals, but he was ruled out of bounds. Two seconds later, he was taken down and lost.”

A Vince Peluso column: GV a long way from satisfied
At this point in the baseball season, there are two types of teams remaining — those that are happy to still be playing, and those that expect to still be playing.
