The Ashtabula County Women’s Scholar-Athlete Association will hold its annual celebration Sunday night.
The organization, founded by Frank Roskovics back in 1996, will turn 17 on Sunday night at the organization’s annual dinner and awards banquet.
The festivities will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be held at A-Tech, formerly known as the Ashtabula Count Joint Vocational School.
The annual $1,500 ACWSAA scholarship will be presented by Ron Weaver.
Nominees for the prestigious honor this year at Jennifer Oxley of Conneaut, Ashley Thomas of Edgewood, Audra Puckrin of Geneva, Bailey Holmes of Grand Valley, Paige Clark of Jefferson, Paige Upole of Lakeside. Sarah Urchek of Pymatuning Valley at Kristina Gallo of SS. John and Paul.
This will mark the seventh year the ACWSAA will award a $1,500 scholarship. Previous to that, the award was $1,000.
All eight nominees will receive at $150 scholarship.
That night, the ACWSAA will also present its 858th plaque honoring graduating seniors who lettered in two varsity sports and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better. Forty-eight student-athletes will receive such plaques Sunday night.
The fifth recipient of the Gene Gephart ACWSAA Service Award will also be recognized.
The program for the banquet, donated by the Star Beacon, is being dedicated to Karl Pearson. The Hall of Fame sports writer for the Star Beacon and member of the ACWSAA Board of Directors, died Aug. 21.
He put in 37 years of service at the Star Beacon.
