Strong first and third quarters seemed to have the Grand Valley girls basketball team in position for its first win, but chilly second and third quarters and poor foul shooting proved the Mustangs’ undoing in a 40-36 Northeastern Athletic Conference loss Thursday to Bristol.
GV (0-11, 0-5) had a 10-8 lead after the first quarter, but fell behind at the half, 18-11, and trailed 27-20 after three quarters to dig too deep a hole to overcome against Bristol (2-10).
GV also converted just 6-of-23 free throws to Bristol’s 12 of 21, even though the Mustangs outscored the Panthers from the field. Bailey Holmes led GV with 16 points and five steals, while Cheyenne Dohrn had six points. Allyson Jones led Bristol with 10 points, while Crystal Mackey had nine and Amber White seven.
Freshman girls
Geneva’s freshmen continued to roll along against Premier Athletic Conference competition Thursday as it defeated Riverside, 38-26.
Lyndsey Armstrong led Geneva (9-2) with 16 points. Danielle Prostak topped Riverside (3-7) with seven points. Geneva will play at Edgewood on Monday, while Riverside plays at Mentor on Saturday.
Junior high girls
Geneva’s eighth-grade girls basketball team got its season off on the right foot with a 33-19 victory over PAC rival Chardon.
Chelsea Scafuro led the Eagles (1-0) with 10 points, while Emily Ball added seven. They will play at Riverside on Tuesday.
n Chardon 7th 38, Geneva 16 — Danielle Nicholson scored eight points to lead the Eagles, but it wasn’t enough to offset eight points each from Kahrin Spear and Rachel Tusick.
