Annual Scully Match slated for Friday

KARL PEARSON

Many of the area’s top senior wrestlers will be going at it one last time Friday night in the 12th annual Star Beacon-Mike Scully Senior Classic.

The match will begin at 6 p.m. at Lakeside High School. Whenever possible, Ashtabula County seniors will be pitted against Lake County seniors in at least one match.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students. No passes will be honored.

The match is held each year in honor of Mike Scully, the late member of the Star Beacon sports staff. Scully was a huge fan of high school wrestling and was a beloved figure among the area’s wrestlers and coaches of his day.

Wrestlers from every school in the Star Beacon area that has seniors on its roster have been invited to participate. Ashtabula County wrestlers will be coached by Edgewood’s Greg Stolfer, celebrating his 25th year as coach of the Warriors, and Pymatuning Valley’s Kevin Brown. Lake County wrestlers will be coached by Madison’s Ryan Wirtzberger.

One additional attraction for area fans will be the chance to win an Adirondack oak outdoor love seat that is again being donated by Stolfer’s woodshop class from Edgewood High School. Stolfer, a great friend of Mike Scully, and his class have been creating love seats for several years for the event.

Raffle tickets will be sold at $1 for one ticket, three tickets for $2 and an arm’s length of tickets for $5. Several prominent area wrestling families, including the Gilchrist family of Roaming Shores and the Toths from Painesville, have driven away from Lakeside Gymnasium with one of the creations of Stolfer and his class and have given testimonials to the enjoyment they have received from them.
