Locals among district’s best

Barbo, several area players recognized

Several area players and one coach received recognition on the Associated Press All-Northeast Lakes District boys and girls basketball team.

Heading the recognition was Geneva girls basketball coach Nancy Barbo, who led her team to the Division II regional tournament for the first time. She shared Division II Coach of the Year honors with Rocky River’s Michael Murphy.

Three of the players from that regional-qualifying group and Premier Athletic Conference championship team were honored in the Division II ranks. Senior post Taylor Webb was selected to the first team, while fellow post Natalie Stanley and guard Courtney Thompson were named to the honorable mention list.

Two players from Jefferson were also recognized on the Division II girls team. Senior Lizzy Ziemski was chosen for the first team, while Joslin Landis was an honorable-mention selection.

Two members of Lakeside’s boys basketball team were chosen in Division I. Senior Emilio Parks was named to the first team, while Cody Blizzard was placed on the honorable-mention list.

Geneva senior Tyler Erb is on the D-I honorable-mention list.

One other Ashtabula County player received first-team recognition. Grand Valley sophomore A.J. Henson was chosen to that level of the Division III boys team.

Perry junior Anthony Kukwa was named to the first team among the Division II boys.

Three players from Edgewood were selected in the Division II boys ranks. Sean Butler was named to the second team, while Marcus Harmon and Chris McMellen were honorable-mention selections.

Conneaut placed two girls in the Division II ranks. Nichele Johnson was selected to the second team, while Marissa Olmstead was chosen to the honorable-mention list.

Three girls from Pymatuning Valley’s Northeastern Athletic champions were honored in Division III. Senior Olivia Holt was named to the third team, while Brooke Monnolly and Nicole Virostek were on the honorable-mention list.

PV’s boys had two players on the Division III team. Brandon Easton was named to the second team, while Mitch Berrier was chosen for the third team.

Four girls from Madison’s Division I district semifinalists were named to the Division I list. Junior Kelsey Koskinen and senior Kate Oberstar were named to the third team, while Chelsea Davis and Ashley DiLillo received honorable mention.

Three girls from Perry’s Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division co-champions were named in Division II. Meghan Blaha was chosen to the third team, while Cecilia Siegel and Elisse Sailors were honorable-mention choices.

Two Riverside boys were chosen to the honorable-mention list in Division I. They were Mychael Delano and Chris Jefferies.

Conneaut had one player named to the honorable-mention list in the Division II boys in Chris Howland.

Riverside’s Kelly Kohr received honorable-mention status among the Division I girls.

All-Ohio teams in girls basketball will be announced early next week leading up to the girls state tournaments. All-Ohio teams in boys basketball will be announced early in the week of March 22 before the boys state tournaments.
