The most recent rendition of our annual high school football preview section is a finalist in the category of best special sports section in the Associated Press Society of Ohio’s yearly contest.
“Kickoff ’09,” a 32-page broadsheet section that appeared in our Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009 edition, is one of five sections eligible to be named best in Ohio in Division III, which includes all newspapers in the state with a circulation between 13,000 and 24,999.
Other special sections named finalists are The (Findlay) Courier, “Whoosh;” and Roger Metzger and Hank Keahley of The (Dover-New Philadelphia) Times-Reporter, “State Champions.”
Stories in “Kickoff ‘’09” were penned by sports staffers Karl Pearson and Bob Ettinger and ace correspodents Chris Larick, Steve Goldman, Adam Raeder and Jason Tirotta.
Photographs in the section were taken by staff photographers Warren Dillaway and Bill West.
The cover of the section was designed by Star Beacon graphic artist Rick Williams.
The winner will be announced at the APSO’s annual convention May 2 in Columbus.
